The Grotte Carnival featuring masks, allegorical floats, and street parties
The Grotte Carnival is the main carnival celebration in the municipality of Grotte, a small town in the Agrigento hinterland in the province of Agrigento, in the heart of Sicily. It is an event that has truly found its identity over the last decade, growing thanks to the commitment of local administrations and associations to become one of the most cherished winter traditions in Grotte.
The heart of the festival is the masked parade through the town streets: the main street and Piazza Umberto I fill with costumed groups, colorful outfits, and themed allegorical floats, creating an atmosphere of joy and togetherness that involves families, children, and young people alike. Over the years, the event has been enriched with DJ sets, dancing, and musical performances, turning public spaces into a massive party venue.
The day traditionally concludes with an evening celebration and the awards ceremony for the competing categories: best mask, best allegorical float, and best costumed group. It is this participatory and popular spirit that makes the Grotte Carnival a defining moment for the Grotte community.
Alongside the main parade, there are initiatives dedicated to children and families, such as the Coriandoli a catinelle party promoted by the Youth Council, designed as a safe and carefree space for the little ones. The event is organized by the Muoviti Grotte Social Promotion Association with the support of the Municipality of Grotte and the Department of Entertainment, representing an opportunity to discover the most authentic side of Sicily, where small-town festivals remain a living heritage.
