The Spongano Granita Festival
The Granita Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Spongano, a village in lower Salento in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Apulia. Every year in August, the Pro Loco Spongano APS transforms the central Piazza della Vittoria into a large evening gathering dedicated to artisanal granita, the quintessential refreshing treat of southern summer nights.
Artisanal granita, the star of the festival
The heart of the event is the granita prepared with fresh, seasonal Apulian fruit, using a process that is almost an art form in Spongano. The ice is shaved and flavored with natural syrups and juices, creating a variety of flavors to sample one after another. The most famous remains the lemon granita, the pride and joy of the town, accompanied by options such as cherry, orzata, and mint. Everything is strictly artisanal, served in a festive atmosphere that engages both young and old.
A community evening in Salento
The Granita Festival is more than just a gastronomic moment: it is a true community celebration. August evenings see the square fill with residents and vacationers, amidst conversation, music, and the simple pleasure of a shared granita under the Salento sky. How to get there
Spongano is located in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS275 (exit towards Spongano) or from the Adriatic coastal road. The Spongano train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est, with connections from Lecce and Maglie.
Admission and hours
The event has free admission and takes place in the evening, generally starting from 9:00 PM, in Piazza della Vittoria.
Tips
