About Armonia Festival

In the heart of Salento, the Armonia Festival – Narratives in Terra d'Otranto brings great contemporary literature to the villages of the Capo di Leuca. Conceived by the Idrusa Bookstore in Alessano and the NarrAzioni Association under the artistic direction of Mario Desiati, it is a widespread festival that weaves together the Premio Strega, the Premio Calvino, meetings with writers, public readings, and projects for children. An event that turns reading into an act of community and resistance, from historic palaces and squares to the sea of Santa Maria di Leuca.

A widespread literary festival in Terra d'Otranto

The Armonia Festival – Narratives in Terra d'Otranto is the premier literary event of the Capo di Leuca, promoted by the Idrusa Bookstore in Alessano and the NarrAzioni Cultural Association, established in 2017 with the stated goal of increasing the number of readers in Salento. Under the artistic direction of writer Mario Desiati, the festival has evolved over the years into a widespread event, spanning villages, historic palaces, and squares in the municipality of Alessano and neighboring towns in the Province of Lecce, Puglia.

An itinerant model across the villages of Salento

Armonia has no single home: it is a festival on the move. Its stages include Alessano, Specchia, Lucugnano, Presicce-Acquarica, Castrignano del Capo, Morciano di Leuca, Santa Maria di Leuca, and even reaches Lecce, bringing leading authors of Italian and international fiction to engage with the public in places steeped in history and beauty. The connection to the territory is the hallmark of the event: reading becomes an opportunity to rediscover ducal palaces, churches, courtyards, and hidden corners of lower Salento.

The main sections

  • Premio Strega: the Salento stop of the Strega Tour, featuring presentations of books nominated for Italy's most important literary award and the subsequent appearance of the winner.
  • Premio Italo Calvino: a focus dedicated to new voices in Italian fiction, traditionally hosted at Palazzo Comi in Lucugnano.
  • Mediterranean Discourses: meetings that broaden the perspective to the Mediterranean and its conflicts, themes, and cultures.
  • Armonia Off: the summer section between Alessano and Castrignano del Capo, with presentations and dialogues with writers during the evenings of July and August.
  • Armonia Kids: a project dedicated to younger readers, with workshops and activities for families and children.

A community of readers

The festival is much more than a series of presentations: it is an ongoing cultural project involving schools, libraries, municipalities, and volunteers of the Capo di Leuca. The event is supported by the Regional Council of Puglia and collaborates with the Maria and Goffredo Bellonci Foundation and the Premio Italo Calvino. Thanks to this grassroots work, Alessano and the villages of Salento become an open-air laboratory every year where literature becomes a shared experience.

Why attend

For those visiting Puglia in the summer, the Armonia Festival is a unique opportunity to combine the pleasure of reading with the discovery of the most authentic Salento, far from mass tourism circuits. A public of enthusiasts and curious minds gathers under the stars, between a meeting with an author and a stroll through the whitewashed alleys, to experience culture as an integral part of the landscape.
