Allegorical floats, traditional drummers and the twelve months parading through the streets of San Felice a Cancello
The Gran Carnevale Sanfeliciano is the carnival celebration that brings winter to life in San Felice a Cancello, a town in the province of Caserta, in Campania. Born as a joint initiative between the municipal administration and local associations, it has quickly become one of the most popular events on the local calendar, reaching its third edition in 2026.
This is not a massive commercial tourist attraction, but rather a grassroots village festival where local districts—Polvica, Botteghino, Cave, San Marco, and Cancello Scalo—contribute their own floats, costumed groups, and volunteers. This collective spirit makes it an authentic event, deeply cherished by local families.
The heart of the day is the parade of allegorical floats. The procession forms in the Polvica district and travels through the town's main streets to Piazza Giovanni XXIII, where the grand finale stage is set up. Along the route, crowds line the streets, filling the air with confetti and streamers while music plays and costumed groups interact with the spectators.
The finale in the square is the highlight of the day, featuring entertainment, music, and awards for the participants.
The floats are handcrafted by district committees and associations, who spend weeks preparing for the big day. Themes change annually, blending satire, popular tradition, and children's stories. The 2026 edition featured floats such as «A mort e Vicienz Carnevale» and the «Carovana Western».
Two elements distinguish the Gran Carnevale Sanfeliciano from conventional parades. The first is the bottari: the rhythmic percussion of barrels, tubs, and scythes, a tradition rooted in the rural culture of the Caserta area, performed here by students from the «F. Gesuè» middle school. The second is the re-enactment of the twelve months, organized by the Cave «Terra Nostra» association: twelve figures in period costumes represent the agricultural cycle, its labor, and its seasonal products, a form of popular theater that survives in only a few parts of Campania.
The event is coordinated and funded by the Municipality of San Felice a Cancello and is made possible by the volunteer work of several local groups: the Pro Loco Botteghino APS, the Cave «Terra Nostra» association, and the «Oltre ogni Confine» association from the San Marco district. Other local entities, such as the Pro Loco Polis APS, also help animate the carnival season and document the parades. For the 2026 edition, the administration allocated a total of 7,000 euros to support the organizing associations.
Admission is free, and the event takes place entirely outdoors along the town's streets and squares. It is a family-friendly festival with games, entertainment, and costumes. The 2026 program included the «Nando's World Animation» group, flag-wavers from Casali di Minturno, and a «Mascot Contest» with prizes. We recommend arriving a little early, as streets along the parade route are closed to traffic.
San Felice a Cancello is located about thirty kilometers northeast of Naples and fifteen kilometers southeast of Caserta, in a transition area between the Caserta plains and the hills bordering the Suessola Valley. It is a dispersed municipality made up of several districts, each preserving its own identity—a structure perfectly reflected in the Carnival, where every neighborhood brings its own contribution to the streets. Visitors can easily combine the festival with a trip to nearby valley towns or the Royal Palace of Caserta, just a few kilometers away.
The 2026 event confirmed the well-established formula: the parade departed from the Polvica district at 3:30 PM, crossed the main streets of San Felice a Cancello, and concluded with a grand finale in Piazza Giovanni XXIII starting at 5:00 PM.
Among the allegorical floats in the parade were «A mort e Vicienz Carnevale» and the «Carovana Western», accompanied by costumed groups and the re-enactment of the twelve months in period attire by the Cave «Terra Nostra» association. The bottari from the «F. Gesuè» middle school, the flag-wavers from Casali di Minturno, and entertainment by «Nando's World Animation» with games for children were also highlights.
The day concluded in the square with the «Mascot Contest» awards. For this edition, the Municipality allocated 7,000 euros to support the organizing associations: 3,500 euros to Pro Loco Botteghino APS and 3,500 euros to the Cave «Terra Nostra» association, with the collaboration of the «Oltre ogni Confine» association from the San Marco district.
Sunday, February 15, 2026 — Third Edition of the Gran Carnevale Sanfeliciano
San Felice a Cancello can be reached by train via the Cancello station in the Cancello Scalo district, served by regional lines between Naples and Caserta; from the station, you can continue by bus or car to the town center. By car, the town is well-connected to both Caserta and the Nola/Naples area.
The procession starts in the Polvica district and ends in Piazza Giovanni XXIII, where the stage for the grand finale is located. If arriving by car, it is best to park in side streets away from the route, as the streets involved in the parade are closed to traffic in the afternoon.
Admission is free for all street events and the finale in the square.
Bring confetti and streamers for the kids and dress in layers: February afternoons can be mild, but temperatures drop quickly after sunset. For definitive schedules, check the notices published by the Municipality of San Felice a Cancello and the organizing associations in the days leading up to the event.
