About Saint Nicholas Festival

Every September, Castello di Cisterna, in the metropolitan city of Naples, unites to honor its patron saint during the Saint Nicholas Patronal Festival. For over a week, the town hosts an intense calendar of religious and secular events: the novena, Holy Masses, a solemn procession, a historical pageant, street illuminations, and a rich musical program ranging from concerts to public performances, all culminating in a spectacular fireworks display.

A festival that unites the entire community

The Saint Nicholas Patronal Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Castello di Cisterna, a small town in the metropolitan city of Naples, in Campania. Every year, in the second half of September, the entire town comes together to pay homage to its patron saint with a long week of celebrations that weave together religious devotion, popular culture, and entertainment. It is one of those festivals that captures the most authentic soul of the Campanian villages, where faith and secular celebration coexist in a single, heartfelt tradition.

Saint Nicholas, patron of Castello di Cisterna

Saint Nicholas of Bari, one of the most venerated figures in Christianity and protector of numerous communities in Southern Italy, is the patron saint of Castello di Cisterna. While the liturgical feast falls on December 6th, the town has chosen to dedicate its major secular festival to the saint in September, when the mild weather allows for festivities in the squares and streets late into the night. Popular devotion reaches its peak during the solemn procession that winds through the town, accompanied by the moving participation of the faithful.

The rhythm of the festivities

The celebrations open with the novena and Holy Masses in honor of the saint, moments of reflection that prepare the community for the solemn day. With the switching on of the illuminations, the town changes its appearance: arches of lights brighten the main streets, transforming Castello di Cisterna into an open-air stage. During the central days, the festival comes alive with street performers, family entertainment, and a musical program that draws crowds from across the Neapolitan area.

Music, historical pageant, and fireworks

The secular side of the festival features live concerts, DJ sets, and guests from the Campanian music scene, building to a crescendo over the weekend. On Sunday, the main day, following religious services and the procession, the town center hosts the historical pageant, featuring performances by drummers and bottari groupsโ€”custodians of an ancient percussive tradition of Southern folklore. At midnight, the grand fireworks display closes the festivities, lighting up the sky above the town.

Between the sacred and the popular

What makes the Saint Nicholas Festival special is the balance between its two souls: on one hand, the spiritual dimension of the novena and the procession; on the other, the joyful and convivial character of a village fair, with its food stalls, the "pasta and wine" events organized by the committee, and the participation of entire families. It is the occasion when the community of Castello di Cisterna rediscovers its sense of belonging and welcomes visitors and curious onlookers from neighboring towns.

A tradition of the Campania region

Organized by the Saint Nicholas Festival Committee with the involvement of the parish and the municipal administration, the festival represents a pillar of local identity. Those visiting Castello di Cisterna during these days have the opportunity to experience firsthand one of the many patronal festivals that mark the calendar of the villages in the province of Naples, where tradition is renewed every year with undiminished enthusiasm.
