Christmas comes alive among the Early Christian Basilicas
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
During the Christmas season, the town of Cimitile, a small village in the province of Naples just a stone's throw from Nola, becomes the stage for one of Campania's most evocative events: the Living Nativity and Street Artists Festival. The representation comes to life within the Complex of Early Christian Basilicas, considered the largest archaeological example of early Christian art in Europe, featuring places of worship with origins dating back to the 4th century. It is in this unique setting, suspended between archaeology and spirituality, that the nativity returns to life every year.
The route leads visitors through an immersive narrative: from the streets of the historic center to the ancient basilicas, scenes of the nativity unfold with costumed characters. You will encounter Bethlehem, the Roman camp, King Herod's palace, shepherds, and the Magi. The result is a participatory re-enactment that involves dozens of local performers and restores the atmosphere of the time, complete with fires, traditional crafts, and ancient voices.
Alongside the sacred scenes, the living nativity reconstructs the daily life of a distant era. Along the path, ancient craft workshops open their doors with artisans at work, and there is no shortage of tastings of so-called flavors of the past, allowing visitors to sample traditional local products in a meticulously curated setting.
In recent editions, the event has been enriched by the Street Artists Festival, which brings live music, dance, and performances to the alleys. The squares and streets of the village come alive with roving shows, creating a dialogue between the solemnity of the religious re-enactment and the vibrancy of street art.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Cimitile together with the Amici del Presepe Vivente association and the local Pro Loco, and is part of the "Sei Borghi, Mille Storie" village enhancement project, funded under the Campania Region POC. Beyond attracting visitors from all over Campania, the event aims to strengthen community cohesion and a sense of belonging, making Christmas a moment of encounter, beauty, and sharing.
The 2026 edition of the Living Nativity and Street Artists Festival of Cimitile has not yet been officially confirmed. The event, organized by the Amici del Presepe Vivente association with the Municipality of Cimitile and the Pro Loco, traditionally takes place at the end of December within the Complex of Early Christian Basilicas. The detailed program and final dates will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
