The largest static float parade in Europe, set in the Giudicarie valleys
The Gran Carnevale di Storo is a hallmark event of the Municipality of Storo, located in the Valle del Chiese within the Giudicarie region of the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Founded in 1967 as a playful way to make the town's carnival tradition unique, it has become one of the most renowned festivals in the entire region, attracting thousands of spectators every year.
What sets Storo apart from any other carnival is its static float format. Since the 1990s, instead of moving through the streets, the allegorical floats are arranged along a circular route in the historic center. Visitors move from one structure to the next, as if exploring an open-air exhibition. Each float features skits and dances with hundreds of costumed performers, bringing satire about national news and local life in the Giudicarie to the stage. Due to this uniqueness, the event has earned the title of "the largest static float parade in Europe."
The Storo carnival is also a gastronomic highlight. During the peak days, visitors can taste polenta carbonera, a traditional local dish made with cornmeal (Storo is famous for its yellow flour) and cheese, prepared by the town's traditional Polenter.
Over the decades, the musical aspect of the festival has evolved: from accordions and ballroom orchestras to the DJ sets that now energize the Opening Party and the Closing Party at the StoroE20 and Pala Catta venues. The final evening hosts the awards ceremony for the floats and masked groups, featuring the presentation of the Gran Carnevale Trophy, the Hermann Trophy, and the Mati Quadrati Trophy.
The Gran Carnevale is organized by the Pro Loco Storo "Mati Quadrati" with the involvement of hundreds of volunteers, float builders, and masked groups from Storo, the Valle del Chiese, and the Giudicarie. It is a celebration that unites the entire community and represents a heritage of Trentino folk traditions passed down for over half a century.
The 57th edition of the Gran Carnevale di Storo opened on Shrove Thursday with the traditional parade of children from the kindergartens and primary schools of Storo and Lodrone, followed on Saturday, February 14, by the musical Opening Party with various DJs. On Shrove Tuesday, 6 floats and 3 masked groups paraded, while the peak day of Saturday, February 21 (the first Saturday of Lent) featured 15 floats and 4 masked groups performing from 1:15 PM along the circular route. The day concluded with the Open Party at Pala Catta, a tasting of polenta carbonera prepared by the Polenter, and the evening Closing Party at StoroE20 with the awards ceremony and DJ sets.

The carnival takes place over several days in February, with the main parade on Shrove Tuesday and the peak day on the first Saturday of Lent. Updated programs and schedules are available on the official social media channels (Facebook and Instagram "Gran Carnevale di Storo") and at the Pro Loco Storo office.
