The centuries-old rite of the Madonna Addolorata and the Dead Christ through the streets of the historic center
In the heart of Holy Week, Marsala โ the ancient Lilibeo, in the province of Trapani โ experiences one of its most profound religious traditions: the Good Friday Procession, dedicated to the Madonna Addolorata and the Dead Christ. It is a rite that blends popular piety with the city's centuries-old history, drawing faithful, confraternities, and curious onlookers along the streets of the historic center every year.
The celebration traces its roots back to the late 18th century, when the Confraternita Maria SS. Addolorata commissioned the wooden statue of the Virgin. Since then, the cult of the Addolorata in Marsala has grown to become extraordinarily impressive, with the Good Friday procession representing its culmination. Unlike the rites of Holy Thursday, the emotional focus here is the intimate sorrow of the Mother facing the death of her Son.
The statue of the Addolorata leaves the Santuario di Piazza dell'Addolorata and, following the solemn Celebration of the Lord's Passion at the Mother Church, the procession officially begins. The sacred statues of the Dead Christ and the Addolorata are carried through the streets, followed by civil and religious authorities, confraternities, and numerous devotees. The procession winds through squares and streets for hours, with stops for prayer, before returning to the Sanctuary.
The citizenry is traditionally invited to honor the passage of the Dead Christ and the Addolorata with floral decorations and the display of fine linens on balconies and along the route. Upon the return of the procession, the Sanctuary remains open until midnight for personal prayer, extending the reflection of an evening that deeply marks the spiritual calendar of Marsala and all of Western Sicily.
The Good Friday Procession is part of the rich landscape of Holy Week rites in the Trapani area, including Mysteries, sacred representations, and processions that characterize this part of Sicily. In Marsala, Good Friday is an opportunity to rediscover the historic center and the Marian devotion that has accompanied the Lilibean community for generations.
The 2026 edition of the Good Friday Procession took place in Marsala on Friday, April 3, 2026, organized by the Confraternita Maria SS. Addolorata. Once again, the rite drew numerous faithful and visitors to the Lilibean historic center.
For the 2026 edition, the traditional itinerary underwent a route change due to the closure of via Pellegrino, next to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Cava, which was undergoing geological surveys. Citizens were invited to honor the passage of the Dead Christ and the Addolorata with floral decorations and the display of fine linens.
