The village where Golosaria was born, amidst markets, wine, and rolling hills
Among the dozens of villages that host Golosaria among the Castles of Monferrato every spring, Vignale Monferrato, in the province of Alessandria, holds a special place: it is here, on the hills of the Monferrato Casalese, a UNESCO World Heritage site, that the food and wine event conceived by journalist Paolo Massobrio and the Club di Papillon took its first steps. Overlooking a sea of vineyards, the town transforms its squares, historic palaces, and wine cellars into a widespread stage for taste, where a tasting glass accompanies the discovery of the territory.
The most anticipated moment in Vignale is the May Market in Piazza del Popolo, featuring stalls from artisans and small producers of the Monferrato: cheeses, extra virgin olive oil, flowers, honey, and traditional peasant specialties. Surrounding the square are the day's other offerings, from guided tours of the village and the infernot (underground cellars) to photography exhibitions, in a festive atmosphere that involves both residents and visitors.
At Palazzo Callori, the town's historic residence, tastings are held for the signature wines of this corner of Piedmont: Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese, Barbera, and Rubino. Those who love to walk can participate in "Walking in Monferrato," a stroll through valleys and farmsteads that leads to the discovery of the hilly landscape with gourmet stops along the way, while quad bike tours offer another perspective on the hills. There are also plenty of activities for families, from "saddle baptism" with ponies and horses to activities for the little ones.
A now-traditional appointment of the Vignale stop is the "Amici del Grignolino" ceremony, which rewards figures from the world of culture and entertainment linked to the territory. The festival closes with the cutting of the Torta di Aleramo, a symbolic dessert that recalls the legend of the founder of Monferrato.
The Vignale stop is part of a much larger mosaic: Golosaria among the Castles of Monferrato involves over forty municipalities in the provinces of Alessandria and Asti, transforming the entire territory into a great itinerary through castles, villages, vineyards, and historic residences. Experiencing Golosaria in Vignale Monferrato means returning to the roots of this event, in one of the most beautiful and authentic villages of the Monferrato Casalese.
For the twentieth anniversary of Golosaria, Vignale Monferrato was one of the key towns of Itinerary 1, alongside Conzano and Camagna Monferrato. The twentieth-anniversary edition, themed "Taste, home, the hills," took place on May 16 and 17, 2026, involving over forty municipalities of the Monferrato. In Vignale, the village where the event was born twenty years ago, the two days combined a market, tastings, music, walks, and family activities, with pinzimonio chosen as the village's symbolic dish.
Vignale Monferrato is located in the province of Alessandria, on the hills of the Monferrato Casalese. By car, it can be reached from the A26 motorway (Casale Monferrato Sud exit), continuing towards the village along the hilly roads. The nearest train station is in Casale Monferrato, a few kilometres away, from where you can continue by car or local transport.
The May Market in Piazza del Popolo is free to enter. Some activities, such as guided tastings, walks, and quad tours, may require a participation fee or booking: for the updated programme and registration methods, it is advisable to consult the official Golosaria website or the Municipality of Vignale Monferrato.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking through the village's uphill streets and for strolls through the hills. Spring is the ideal time to admire the Monferrato vineyards in full bloom.
