Celebrating the "four-sided flower" in the heart of the Ficuzza forest

The Caciocavallo Festival is the most anticipated summer event in Godrano, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo perched among the mountains of west-central Sicily. The heart of the event is Piazza Aldo Moro, which fills with the aroma of the town's signature cheese: the Godrano caciocavallo, nicknamed the "four-sided flower" due to its distinctive parallelepiped shape. The festival showcases this iconic product and offers visitors the chance to sample numerous local specialties for free.
Godrano caciocavallo is a stretched-curd cheese made from the milk of Cinisara cows, a native breed from the Palermo province. Its origins are ancient: historical documents trace the Palermo caciocavallo back to the 1400s, when it was considered a premium food destined for the tables of nobles and clergy. The compact, straw-yellow paste is crafted using traditional methods and then hung to dry "astride" (a cavallo) a wooden pole, a technique that gives the cheese its name. Recognized as a Traditional Agri-Food Product, it can be enjoyed fresh or aged for several months.
During the festival, Piazza Aldo Moro hosts stalls from local producers offering free tastings of caciocavallo and other regional specialties. Evenings are enlivened by live music, comedy performances, and entertainment for all ages. There are also side events, such as vintage car and motorcycle rallies that parade through the village streets, reflecting the community spirit and festive atmosphere that define the event.
Godrano lies in a valley rich in flora and fauna, within the Bosco della Ficuzza, Rocca Busambra, Bosco del Cappelliere, and Gorgo del Drago Nature Reserve, one of the most extensive and evocative wooded areas in Sicily. The festival is thus set in a stunning natural context, where dairy and agropastoral traditions coexist with hiking and nature trails. Visiting the Caciocavallo Festival means discovering the rural, genuine soul of the Palermo hinterland.
The 2026 edition of the Godrano Caciocavallo Festival does not yet have an official program. Based on recent editions, the event is expected in August in Piazza Aldo Moro, featuring the usual free tastings of Godrano caciocavallo, local producer stalls, and evening entertainment. The final dates will be announced by the organizers on the Municipality of Godrano's channels.
Godrano is about an hour's drive from Palermo. It can be reached via the SS118 towards Marineo, then following signs for Godrano and the Ficuzza. The village is immersed in the Bosco della Ficuzza, perfect for those wanting to combine their visit with a walk in nature.
Admission to the festival is free; tastings of caciocavallo and local products are offered at the stalls in Piazza Aldo Moro, generally in the evening. It is advisable to check the updated program on the official channels of the Municipality of Godrano.
