About Caciocavallo Festival

Every summer, the small village of Godrano, in the province of Palermo, celebrates its most prized product with the Caciocavallo Festival. In Piazza Aldo Moro, at the foot of the Rocca Busambra and nestled within the Bosco della Ficuzza, producers, cheesemakers, and visitors gather to enjoy free tastings of the local caciocavalloโ€”the famous "four-sided flower" made from the milk of Cinisara cows. With stalls featuring local delicacies, live music, comedy shows, and vintage car rallies, the festival blends Sicilian agropastoral tradition with the convivial spirit of an authentic village feast.

A festival dedicated to the "four-sided flower"

The Caciocavallo Festival is the most anticipated summer event in Godrano, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo perched among the mountains of west-central Sicily. The heart of the event is Piazza Aldo Moro, which fills with the aroma of the town's signature cheese: the Godrano caciocavallo, nicknamed the "four-sided flower" due to its distinctive parallelepiped shape. The festival showcases this iconic product and offers visitors the chance to sample numerous local specialties for free.

A cheese with ancient roots

Godrano caciocavallo is a stretched-curd cheese made from the milk of Cinisara cows, a native breed from the Palermo province. Its origins are ancient: historical documents trace the Palermo caciocavallo back to the 1400s, when it was considered a premium food destined for the tables of nobles and clergy. The compact, straw-yellow paste is crafted using traditional methods and then hung to dry "astride" (a cavallo) a wooden pole, a technique that gives the cheese its name. Recognized as a Traditional Agri-Food Product, it can be enjoyed fresh or aged for several months.

Tastings, music, and conviviality

During the festival, Piazza Aldo Moro hosts stalls from local producers offering free tastings of caciocavallo and other regional specialties. Evenings are enlivened by live music, comedy performances, and entertainment for all ages. There are also side events, such as vintage car and motorcycle rallies that parade through the village streets, reflecting the community spirit and festive atmosphere that define the event.

Between nature and tradition in the Bosco della Ficuzza

Godrano lies in a valley rich in flora and fauna, within the Bosco della Ficuzza, Rocca Busambra, Bosco del Cappelliere, and Gorgo del Drago Nature Reserve, one of the most extensive and evocative wooded areas in Sicily. The festival is thus set in a stunning natural context, where dairy and agropastoral traditions coexist with hiking and nature trails. Visiting the Caciocavallo Festival means discovering the rural, genuine soul of the Palermo hinterland.
