The August patronal feast of Casteldaccia, blending faith, the 'flight of the angels', and local folklore

The Saint Joseph Festival is the most important event of the year for Casteldaccia, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo overlooking the Gulf, in the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sicily. Although Saint Joseph is liturgically celebrated on March 19th, it is the summer feast in Augustโknown in the local dialect as the "Festa ranni" (the great feast)โthat brings the entire community together and transforms the historic center into a stage for devotion and folklore.
The summer festivities have roots in the rural civilization, serving as a thanksgiving to the saint for the harvest. After a hiatus of about twenty years, the August festival was restored in 1997, while the characteristic equestrian parades returned in 1999. Today, it represents the town's great annual gathering and an opportunity for the many Casteldaccia natives who emigrated to Germany, Canada, and the United States to return home.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn procession of the wooden statue of Saint Joseph, an 18th-century work restored in 2005 and carried on shoulders through the town streets. During the parade, the spectacular flight of the angels takes place: children suspended in the air by ropes recite poems in honor of the saint, in one of the most emotional and identity-defining moments of the entire celebration. The procession is accompanied by the sound of the brass band, the rolling of drums, horse parades, and mortar fire, while illuminations light up the streets.
Alongside the sacred dimension, the festival offers a rich secular program: comedy shows and cabaret, folk performances, art and photography contests, and a fair with craft stalls. Great emphasis is placed on gastronomy with the Casteldaccia Street Food Fest, a village of taste featuring Sicilian street food specialties (sausage, stigghiola, panelle, sfincione, traditional pastries), and the Casteld'Arte Buskers Festival, dedicated to street performers.
The evenings culminate in major free concerts in Piazza Matrice, which in recent years have hosted well-known names in Italian music, and in the two fireworks displays that close the festival's peak days. A mix of the sacred and the profane that makes the Saint Joseph Festival the symbolic event of the summer in Casteldaccia and this entire area of the Palermo province.
The 199th edition of the Saint Joseph Festival in Casteldaccia is announced by the Festival Committee for August 2026. At the moment, the precise dates and the complete program have not yet been officially released.
Following tradition, the festival should span several days around the penultimate Sunday of August, with the solemn procession of the patron saint, the characteristic flight of the angels, equestrian parades, the brass band, the fair, the Casteldaccia Street Food Fest, and major free concerts in Piazza Matrice. The detailed program will be communicated by the Committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
Casteldaccia is located along the Tyrrhenian coast, about 25 km east of Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Casteldaccia exit). By train, the Casteldaccia station is served by the Palermo-Messina line. The nearest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (Punta Raisi), about 50 km away.
Religious celebrations, the procession, and concerts in Piazza Matrice are free of charge. Street food items are paid for individually at each stall.
The historic center is closed to traffic during the peak days: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the outer areas. Concert evenings attract large crowds.
