A nativity scene carved in rock, amidst lights and local tales

During the Christmas season, Calascibetta, a small village perched in the Province of Enna, in the heart of Sicily, comes alive with one of the most evocative living nativity scenes on the island. Titled "The Nativity in the rock... amidst lights and local tales," the event reconstructs the atmosphere of ancient Bethlehem within the narrow streets, caves, and caverns that define the town's historic centre.
The uniqueness of this nativity lies in its setting: the village is built on a formation of grey calcarenite rock, carved over centuries by its early inhabitants to create caves and caverns, which are still visible and often interconnected today. The route winds primarily along via Carcere, just a few metres from the main square, where a natural cave hosts the Nativity scene with Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. No artificial backdrops are needed: the very stone of the village becomes the nativity scene.
The nativity involves over a hundred actors in period costumes faithful to the time of Christ. Along the path, visitors encounter shepherds, blacksmiths, cobblers, artisans, farmers, washerwomen, and vendors, all busy recreating the trades and daily life of two thousand years ago. It is an immersive experience that engages sight, smell, and taste, with samples and aromas accompanying the visit.
The event is organised by the Pro Loco of Calascibetta together with the Municipality of Calascibetta and involves local associations and citizens, as well as guests from the Reception and Integration System (SAI). Over the years, the Calascibetta Living Nativity has earned an extraordinary award at the regional Praesepium Siciliae competition, a recognition of its high merits in the art of nativity scenes. Along the route, artisan markets, sweets, and traditional drinks complete the festivities.
The Calascibetta Living Nativity is traditionally held around December 26-28, in the evening. Dates and the programme for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: organisers typically publish the calendar in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
