About San Giorgio Living Nativity

In the heart of the Sicilian hinterland, the small hamlet of San Giorgio (Municipality of Assoro, Province of Enna) transforms every December into a large open-air nativity scene. Among the village alleys and around the Church of San Giorgio Martire, the locals dress up as Nativity characters and ancient craftsmen, recreating the atmosphere, scents, and gestures of times past. An intimate and heartfelt Christmas event, recently established but already one of the most cherished traditions in Assoro.

A nativity scene coming to life in the Enna hinterland

The San Giorgio Living Nativity is the Christmas event that enlivens the hamlet of San Giorgio, a small village in the Municipality of Assoro, in the heart of the Province of Enna. Situated at an altitude of about 580 meters, nestled among the hills of the Sicilian interior, San Giorgio has just over five hundred inhabitants: it is precisely this small scale that makes the performance particularly authentic, as it is staged by the entire local community.

The Nativity among the village alleys

During the performance, the streets and squares around the Church of San Giorgio Martire are transformed into a Nativity village. Residents, both young and old, wear period costumes and bring traditional scenes to life: the Holy Family in the grotto, shepherds, the Three Wise Men, and the ancient crafts of the rural Sicilian village. Visitors follow a route through the narrow streets, discovering the set-up corners one by one, amidst lit fires, antique tools, and the flavors of rustic cuisine.

A recent but deeply felt tradition

The San Giorgio Living Nativity is a young event: the 2025 edition was the second, a sign of an appointment that is rapidly taking root in the hamlet's Christmas calendar. It is a grassroots initiative, born from the inhabitants' desire to rediscover and share their roots in a hamlet that still preserves the historic centers of Di Marco, Bannò, Di Pasqua, and Screois, and which celebrates its patron saint, San Giorgio Martire, on the first Sunday of July.
