About Frog Festival

Every spring, the small village of San Ponso in the heart of the Canavese region comes alive with the Frog Festival. Organized by the local Pro Loco, this food and wine event draws thousands of visitors from across Piedmont. For over a week, the heated, covered pavilion in Piazza del Battistero serves up battered fried frogs and frog risotto, accompanied by live music, dancing, vintage car and motorcycle rallies, medieval games, and activities for all ages. A free-entry event that celebrates taste, conviviality, and Canavese tradition.

The San Ponso Frog Festival

In the small municipality of San Ponso, located in the Metropolitan City of Turin and in the heart of the Piedmontese Canavese, spring brings one of the area's most anticipated culinary events: the Frog Festival. Organized by the Pro Loco of San Ponso with the patronage of the Municipality and the Piedmont Region, the event takes place from late April to early May, turning the village into a meeting point for food lovers and families from all over the territory.

Frogs, the stars of the table

The heart of the festival is naturally the food pavilion—spacious, covered, and heated—set up in Piazza del Battistero along Via Salassa. Here, frogs are served according to the best Canavese tradition: battered fried frogs and frog risotto are the signature dishes, accompanied by themed menus and other typical Piedmontese specialties. For those who prefer, a chicken alternative is available on the final evenings. Lunches and dinners are held throughout the festival; reservations are recommended, while takeaway frogs must be ordered by 6:00 PM.

Music, dancing, and rallies

The Frog Festival is not just about great food. Every evening, the pavilion comes alive with musical and dance nights with free entry, featuring DJs and live bands, including concerts by groups like Boira Fusca, a Celtic Folk Rock band much loved in the Canavese area. Alongside the music, there are numerous rallies: the traditional Vintage Tractor Rally with plowing demonstrations, vintage car and motorcycle meets, off-road clubs, and motoring events that attract enthusiasts of all ages.

Sport, traditions, and the Middle Ages

The program is rounded out by numerous side activities spread across the various days: sports days featuring boxing and volleyball demonstrations, e-bike and mini-moto trails, rescue drills with the Civil Protection and Fire Brigade, dog training demonstrations, and moments dedicated to historical re-enactments with archery and medieval games set around the evocative Romanesque Baptistery of San Ponso, one of the most important monuments in the Canavese.

A community celebration

Reaching its 24th edition in 2026, the Frog Festival represents one of the flagship events for the Pro Loco of San Ponso and the entire Canavese region. More than just a village fair, it is an opportunity to rediscover an ancient culinary tradition, experience moments of conviviality, and support local volunteering in an authentic atmosphere that perfectly represents the spirit of Piedmontese festivals.

Frog Festival — edition 2026

The 24th edition of the San Ponso Frog Festival took place from April 24 to May 2, 2026, confirming the great public success of this Canavese event. For nine days, the Pro Loco served battered fried frogs and frog risotto in the covered pavilion of Piazza del Battistero, featuring free-entry musical evenings, vintage rallies, sports, and medieval re-enactments.
