The historic summer festival in Cascine di Buti featuring fried frogs, bread soup, and ballroom dancing
The Frog and Soup Festival is one of the most deeply rooted gastronomic events in the region. Born in the late 1970s, it has spanned decades while remaining faithful to the authentic flavors of Tuscan peasant cuisine. It takes place in Cascine di Buti, a village in the municipality of Buti, in the province of Pisa, nestled in the heart of Tuscany between the slopes of Monte Pisano and the Serchio Valley.
The 2026 edition, scheduled for the weekends of June 27-28 and July 4-5, confirms a tried-and-tested formula, brought to life by a small army of over eighty volunteers who dedicate themselves to the event with passion every year.
The undisputed star is the frog, served according to the classic recipe in two ways: fried, crispy and golden, and stewed, slow-cooked in a savory sauce. Alongside this signature dish, the kitchen offers the famous Tuscan bread soup, rich and fragrant, as well as numerous other local specialties.
Everything is accompanied by local wines and a genuine atmosphere, where conviviality is just as important as the quality of the food.
The Frog Festival is about more than just good food. The food stands open every evening at 7:00 PM, and after dinner, the party continues with ballo liscio, the true beating heart of the evening. Live orchestras and music transform the Spazio Sagre into a large open-air dance floor, where different generations come together to dance under the Tuscan summer stars.
Organized by the Comitato Sagre Sport e Tempo Libero Cascine di Buti, the event is a prime example of a popular festival run entirely by local volunteers. It is this community spirit, combined with traditional cuisine, that makes it an unmissable summer appointment in the province of Pisa.
For those visiting Tuscany off the beaten path, the Frog Festival in Cascine di Buti is the perfect opportunity to discover a typical river-cuisine dish, experience the authenticity of a village festival, and immerse yourself in the hospitality of the Pisan countryside at the foot of Monte Pisano.
The 2026 Frog and Soup Festival returns to Cascine di Buti, spread over four evenings across the weekends of June 27-28 and July 4-5. The stands at the Spazio Sagre in the sports area open every evening from 7:00 PM.
The menu features the festival's great classics: fried and stewed frogs, Tuscan bread soup, mill-style pasta, grilled meats, and snails. Each evening concludes with traditional ballroom dancing, animated by live orchestras. The event, with free admission, is organized by over eighty volunteers from the Comitato Sagre Sport e Tempo Libero.
