The great ritual bonfire of Salento in Piazza San Nicola
Every year, between late January and early February, the town of Squinzano, in the province of Lecce, pays homage to Saint Anthony the Abbot with its Fòcara: a massive ritual bonfire built from brushwood and vine cuttings, erected in Piazza San Nicola and ignited at dusk. It is one of the most heartfelt fire rituals in Salento, a cousin to the famous Fòcara of Novoli but with a more intimate, community-focused feel, deeply rooted in the local parish and neighborhood.
The festival is promoted by the San Nicola di Myra and Mater Domini parish and unfolds over the course of a full day. The morning is marked by Holy Masses in the Mother Church, while at noon, the evocative blessing of the animals takes place on the church square—a gesture honoring Saint Anthony the Abbot's role as the protector of beasts, the farming world, and fire.
The most anticipated moment arrives in the evening, following the Eucharistic celebration. The lighting of the Fòcara is no mere bonfire; it is a true theatrical and pyromusical performance that recounts the life and temptations of the hermit saint, culminating in the ignition of the pyre. Around the warmth of the flames, the square comes alive with live Salento folk music, featuring the pizzica dance, tambourines, and traditional songs.
The gastronomic component, the heart of Salento conviviality, is never missing: families and visitors are offered pittule (leavened dough fritters) and pasta e ceci (pasta with chickpeas), humble and iconic dishes of the Apulian winter, accompanied by a traditional prize draw. It is an occasion where the entire Squinzano community gathers around the fire, renewing an ancient bond with their roots.
Devotion to Saint Anthony the Abbot in Squinzano is rooted in centuries-old tradition and involves various local communities. Today, the Fòcara represents an important piece of the rich calendar of fire rituals that characterizes Salento and Puglia in January—an intangible heritage that unites spirituality, folklore, and a sense of belonging.
