The Iconella Festival in Veglie

Every year on September 8th, Veglie gathers around the Madonna dell'Iconella for one of its most cherished traditions. This date coincides with the liturgical feast of the Nativity of Mary and marks the ideal end of summer for the Salento community: as the heat begins to fade, the town revives a ritual that blends folk faith, rural memory, and a sense of togetherness. The festival is also known by its dialect name, «Madonna ti la cuneddhra», an affectionate expression used by generations of Veglie residents to refer to the small Virgin venerated at the town's outskirts.

The heart of this devotion is the distinctive octagonal chapel located along the road leading from Veglie toward Leverano, just outside the town center. The building, dedicated to the Madonna of Constantinople, is improperly known as the Iconella church: in ecclesiastical and civil documents, the chapel was long referred to as «Conella» (or «Cunella» in the local dialect), and only in more recent times did the name evolve into «Iconella», perhaps to Italianize the term or simply because it was easier to pronounce. Over the centuries, a tradition of faith has solidified around this small rural sanctuary, still drawing worshippers from across the region today.

Between religious rites and a country fair

The day of September 8th alternates between moments of devotion and celebration. Religious services and the procession are accompanied by a traditional fair, featuring stalls selling typical Salento gastronomic products, alongside a rich secular program: games and activities for children, such as treasure hunts, rural games, sack races, and tug-of-war, usually concluding with prize-giving ceremonies and a fireworks display. The illuminations, set up annually by the Municipality of Veglie, light up the streets and complete the festive atmosphere, while musical groups and bands provide the evening's soundtrack.

Located in western Salento, in the province of Lecce, just a few kilometers from the Ionian coast and the beaches of Porto Cesareo, Veglie preserves one of its most authentic identities through the Iconella Festival.
