In the heart of the Salento winter, while most popular festivities in Puglia sleep in anticipation of summer, the town of Carmiano (Province of Lecce) experiences its most intense moment of the year. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which the locals affectionately call the festival of the "Madonna Nostra", is much more than a religious recurrence: it is the cornerstone around which this town of just over ten thousand inhabitants has built its community identity, a perfect blend of the sacred and the profane that unites the entire town.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in the 17th century, where the high altar houses a fresco depicting the Virgin as a young woman in a red dress, a green mantle, and golden hair, placed inside a golden mandorla, an ancient Marian symbol. The work is linked to the figure of the Salento architect Giuseppe Zimbalo, a master of the Lecce Baroque. The popular legend that gives meaning to the entire festival revolves around the discovery of this fresco.
Devotion begins with the novena and the solemn transfer of the Madonna's statue, culminating in the two main days. The eve of December 7th mixes faith and conviviality: in the morning, the distribution of blessed puccia in the church; in the evening, the great Puccia Festival and concerts in Piazza del Tempo. December 8th, the day of the Immaculate Conception, is dedicated to the solemn procession through the town streets with the majestic statue of the Virgin, her gold crown embellished with precious stones, followed in the afternoon by the evocative historical pageant.
The delicious side of the festival is the Puccia Festival, which brings Piazza del Tempo to life on the evenings of December 7th and 8th. The Salento puccia, a round, soft bread, is filled on the spot according to tradition: tuna, capers, and simple local ingredients. Alongside the puccia, there is no shortage of fried pittule and local wine, in an atmosphere of popular celebration that warms up the Salento winter.
One of the most spectacular moments is the Omaggio dei Rioni, the historical re-enactment pageant that takes place on the afternoon of December 8th, staging the discovery of the Madonna's fresco: horses, carts, and participants in period costumes parade through the streets in a re-enactment involving the town's districts. The festival concludes in style with a fireworks display and major evening musical events.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Immaculate Conception Festival in Carmiano have not yet been announced. However, the festival follows a calendar linked to the liturgical recurrence of December 8th: the eve of the 7th with the distribution of blessed puccia and the Puccia Festival in Piazza del Tempo, and December 8th with the solemn procession of the "Madonna Nostra" and the Omaggio dei Rioni historical pageant. To find out the official program, it is advisable to follow the channels of the parish community and the Municipality of Carmiano in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festival is concentrated in the historic center of Carmiano (LE), between the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Piazza del Tempo (venue for the Puccia Festival and concerts), Piazza A. Diaz, and Largo Immacolata (fireworks display).
Around December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, with the eve on December 7th. Devotion opens with the novena in the preceding days.
