The patronal feast of Campi Salentina: faith, blessed bread, and pizzica
The San Pompilio Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Campi Salentina, a town in northern Salento in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Puglia. Every July 14th and 15th, the entire community gathers to honor San Pompilio Maria Pirrotti (1710-1766), a priest of the Piarist order who lived in Campi during his final years and was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1934. His remains are kept in a crystal and silver urn inside the Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, now commonly known as the Sanctuary of San Pompilio, the spiritual heart of the festival.
The most iconic moment is the blessing of the San Pompilio bread, a tradition rooted in 1765 when the Saint distributed bread to the poor. Still today, on the morning of July 14th, thousands of small blessed loaves are distributed to the faithful as a sign of protection and grace. On the eve, the solemn procession carrying the Saint's urn winds through the town center, accompanied by brass bands and followed by devotees arriving from neighboring towns and even from Montecalvo Irpino, the Saint's birthplace in Campania.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival explodes in its popular dimension: artistic illuminations light up the squares, brass band concerts in the traditional bandstand animate the evenings, and the Salento pizzica draws locals and visitors alike into dances that tell the story of this land's identity. There is no shortage of market stalls, fairground rides, traditional sweets, and the customary fireworks display that concludes the festivities. During these two days, the sanctuary, the Saint's room, and the Pompiliano Museum remain open until late to welcome pilgrims and visitors.
The San Pompilio Festival is much more than a religious commemoration: it is an intangible heritage that every summer strengthens the bond between the community of Campi Salentina and its roots. Those who arrive during these days will find a town dressed for the occasion, an authentic blend of the sacred and the profane, and the warm hospitality typical of the Salento region.
The 2026 San Pompilio Festival returns on the usual dates of July 14th and 15th, following the calendar that unites the Campi Salentina community around its Saint every year. The morning of July 14th is dedicated to the blessing and distribution of the San Pompilio bread, while in the evening, the solemn procession with the Saint's urn takes place through the town streets. On July 15th, the Saint's feast day, the Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit hosts the most solemn liturgical celebrations.
The detailed civil program for 2026, including the names of artists and square performances, will be announced by the Municipality of Campi Salentina and the Piarist Fathers community in the weeks leading up to the festival.
