The patron saint's festival in the heart of Salento
The Sant'Oronzo Patronal Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Campi Salentina, a town in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. The patron saint is celebrated around September 1st, the day commemorating his protection against the plague, while February 19th is dedicated to the Patronage of Sant'Oronzo. For three days, the historic center transforms into an open-air stage, blending the sacred and the profane, popular devotion, and a grand community celebration.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the undena: eleven days of prayer and pilgrimage during which the ancient papier-mâché bust of the Saint visits all the districts and neighborhoods of the city, preparing hearts for the main days. The most solemn moment is the procession of the silver bust of Sant'Oronzo: before it leaves, in Piazza Libertà, the mayor symbolically presents the Saint with the pectoral cross and the keys to the city, in a deeply felt traditional rite. On the day of the festival, a solemn Eucharistic concelebration is held, presided over in recent years by the Archbishop of Lecce.
Alongside the religious rites, the secular component draws thousands of people. The Palio di Sant'Oronzo features games, challenges, and tournaments between the districts for adults and children, evoking the authentic spirit of a village festival. The streets of the town light up with luminarie (artistic light displays), while brass bands, flag-wavers, folk music orchestras, and the 'pizzica' dance animate the squares until late at night. There is no shortage of fireworks, local craft fairs, papier-mâché statue exhibitions, and 'Calici in Centro' wine tastings.
Among the side events, the 'Granaio di Terra d'Otranto' stands out—a food and wine festival dedicated to ancient grains and local products, featuring stands from farms and historic bakeries, fresh pasta workshops, conferences, and exhibitions set up in Piazza Unità d'Italia. The initiative, promoted with the Pro Loco and organizations like GAL Terra d'Arneo and Slow Food Lecce, highlights the agricultural and rural identity of Salento.
The Sant'Oronzo Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is an identity-defining heritage that unites faith, rural memory, music, and conviviality. For those visiting Salento at the end of summer, it is the ideal opportunity to discover the authentic soul of Campi Salentina and Puglia, amidst sacredness, folk traditions, and flavors of the past.
The Sant'Oronzo Patronal Festival will return to Campi Salentina from August 31 to September 2, 2026, with the patron saint's day set for September 1st. As per tradition, the celebrations will include the undena in the districts, the solemn procession of the silver bust with the rite of handing over the city keys in Piazza Libertà, the Palio di Sant'Oronzo, illuminations, brass bands, folk music, fireworks, and tastings at the 'Granaio di Terra d'Otranto'.
The detailed secular program for the 2026 edition, including artist names and show times, has not yet been published: it will be released by the Municipality of Campi Salentina and the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the festival.
Campi Salentina is located along the main road connecting Lecce to Brindisi. By car: exit from Lecce (approx. 20 km) or from Brindisi (approx. 30 km). By train: the Campi Salentina station is served by the Lecce-Brindisi line. Nearest airports: Brindisi-Casale and Bari-Palese.
The patronal festival is free to attend; events mainly take place in Piazza Libertà and Piazza Unità d'Italia. We recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco for the detailed program and schedules.
During the festival days, the center can be very crowded: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the areas outside the historic center.
