The queens of skiing challenge the formidable Franco Berthod slope
La Thuile, a small and charming Aosta Valley resort nestled at the foot of Mont Blanc and the Rutor glacier, has become a permanent fixture on the FIS Women's Alpine Skiing World Cup calendar. For a few days in March, the Aosta Valley village hosts the world's best downhill and super-G skiers, transforming into an international winter sports stage.
The heart of the event is the Franco Berthod slope, named after the Aosta Valley champion and considered one of the most challenging on the entire World Cup circuit. With sections reaching a maximum gradient of 76%, jumps, and continuous changes in rhythm, it tests even the most experienced athletes: for many, it is one of the most feared descents of the season.
The programme traditionally includes a downhill race and one or more super-G races. High-altitude weather conditions often play a decisive role and can alter the race schedule, forcing the jury to reschedule trials and competitions within a few hours.
Beyond the races, La Thuile experiences the World Cup as a widespread celebration: DJ sets in the Piazzetta delle Funivie, side events, stalls, and a warm welcome that involves the entire community. The event represents an international showcase for the Aosta Valley and for the winter tourism of the municipality of La Thuile, in the province of Aosta.
The March 2026 event on the Franco Berthod slope confirmed how much the La Thuile stage is affected by high-altitude weather. The initially planned downhill race was cancelled by the jury due to bad weather, while the focus shifted to the two women's super-G races. Saturday, March 15th, was kept as a reserve day. An important showcase, especially in view of the Olympic season, with La Thuile playing a leading role in the World Cup circuit in the heart of the Aosta Valley.
Side programme: DJ sets in Piazzetta delle Funivie on race days. The schedule was modified during the event by the FIS jury due to weather conditions. Details and updates on the official website skiworldcuplathuile.com.
La Thuile is accessible by car via the A5 motorway (Morgex exit), then the SS26 and the road to the Piccolo San Bernardo Pass. The nearest train station is Pré-Saint-Didier; shuttle buses operate during high season.
Access to spectator areas along the slope is generally free. Warm clothing and footwear suitable for snow are recommended.
