The first Valle d'Aosta race of trail running in pairs with your dog
For the first time, Valle d'Aosta is hosting a Dog Trail race, a sporting discipline that combines mountain running and the bond with one's dog. The event takes place in Etroubles, a small village in the Province of Aosta along the Via Francigena, in the heart of the upper Gran San Bernardo valley, and is born from the collaboration between the Municipality and the VdA Trailers association.
The Dog Trail is a variant of trail running in which the runner tackles the course together with their dog. The discipline is designed to be inclusive: all dogs, with or without pedigree, can participate, provided they have a microchip. It is the handler who must adapt to the animal's speed and rhythm, in an experience that enhances the understanding and bond between human and dog.
The race takes place according to the regulations of Fidasc (Italian Federation of Sports Shooting and Sports Cynology), under the aegis of Csen. The protection of animal welfare is a priority: dogs will be monitored by veterinarians, with checks during and at the end of the race.
The initiative is part of the Interreg project Destination Barry, which involves Aosta as the lead partner along with Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses, Saint-Oyen, Etroubles, and the Fondation Barry in Martigny, custodian of the famous Gran San Bernardo rescue dog breed.
The first edition of the Dog Trail of Etroubles is scheduled for September 26, 2026. The race marks the arrival in Valle d'Aosta of this discipline that combines trail running and sports cynology, with the handler running by adapting to their dog's pace. The event is organized by the Municipality of Etroubles in collaboration with VdA Trailers, as part of the Interreg Destination Barry project.
The detailed program with start times, route, and distances will be communicated by the organizers closer to the event.
Etroubles is located along the Gran San Bernardo state road (SS27), about 16 km from Aosta. By car, it can be reached from the A5 motorway, exit Aosta, continuing towards the Gran San Bernardo pass.
The race is open to all dogs with a microchip, with or without pedigree. For information on registration and times, contact the Municipality of Etroubles.
