About Veillà

One August evening, the medieval village of Etroubles transforms into a village of yesteryear: it's the Veillà, a historical reenactment where over a hundred volunteers from the Pro Loco (local tourism board) bring to life the crafts and daily moments of the past. Among blacksmiths, spinners, cheesemakers, and woodcutters, along the streets of the village on the Via Francigena, the Veillà combines peasant memory, traditional gastronomy, and music until late at night.

When the village goes back in time

The Veillà d'Etroubles is one of the most beloved historical reenactments in the Aosta Valley. One August evening, the medieval village of Etroubles — a municipality in the upper Gran San Bernardo valley along the Via Francigena, in the Province of Aosta — comes alive along the main street and side alleys with scenes of daily life from the past, recreated by the village inhabitants.

Crafts of yesteryear

The heart of the event is the demonstrations of traditional crafts, recreated live by over a hundred volunteers from the Pro Loco and the village. You can observe:

  • The processing of Fontina cheese and butter production
  • Grain threshing and potato harvesting
  • Wool spinning and weaving, seamstresses and the making of traditional costumes
  • The blacksmith, woodcutters, sawyers, and sausage making
  • Washerwomen, vintage firefighters, chimney sweeps, and traditional games

Gastronomy and celebration

Along the route, there are tasting points with Aosta Valley specialties: seupetta (a hearty soup), minestrone, polenta, sausage, and cheeses, as well as the traditional raspberry cream, merveilleux pastries, and black bread baked for the occasion. The evening concludes with music and dancing in the square, in an atmosphere that blends memory and village celebration.

A tradition spanning decades

Born in 1984, the Veillà is now a fixed event of the Aosta Valley summer: in 2025, the 40th edition was celebrated. It's an opportunity to rediscover the peasant and artisan roots of the Etroubles community, in one of the most characteristic villages of the Gran San Bernardo valley.

Veillà — edition 2026

In 2026, the Veillà d'Etroubles returns, the 41st edition of the historical reenactment that on a Saturday in August transforms the medieval village into a village of yesteryear. Traditional crafts represented live, Aosta Valley gastronomy, and music, animated by over a hundred Pro Loco volunteers.

The 2026 edition of the Veillà d'Etroubles will be the 41st of the event, scheduled for a Saturday in August in the medieval village. As every year, over a hundred Pro Loco volunteers will bring to life the crafts and daily moments of the past, accompanied by food stands with Aosta Valley specialties and music until late at night. The exact date for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Pro Loco in the weeks prior.

Programme Veillà 2026

The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Pro Loco of Etroubles closer to the event. The structure of the evening usually follows that of previous editions:

  • From 7:00 PM — opening of tasting points: seupetta, minestrone, polenta, sausage and cheeses, raspberry cream, merveilleux, black bread baked on site
  • From 8:00 PM — live reenactment of crafts of the past: spinning and weaving, butter production, Fontina cheese making, blacksmith, woodcutters, sausage making, potato harvesting, vintage firefighters
  • Late evening — music and dancing in the square
