The fair of the typical Breno cake, on Palm Sunday
Every Palm Sunday, on the eve of Easter, the village of Breno in Valle Camonica (Province of Brescia) comes alive with the Fiera della Spongada. At the heart of the festival is the spongada, the soft leavened cake that is a symbol of the Camuna confectionery tradition, presented in many interpretations and the absolute protagonist of the stalls in Piazza Generale Ronchi.
The highlight of the day is the "Spongada d'Oro dé Bré" competition, open to private amateur bakers, which awards the best traditional interpretation of the cake. The award ceremony takes place in the late afternoon and is one of the most anticipated moments, capable of transforming the fair into a friendly challenge among families and home baking enthusiasts.
The Fiera della Spongada is not just about gastronomy. The program combines the sweetness of typical products with the discovery of the territory: guided excursions to the Sanctuary of Minerva, visits to the Castle of Breno, and exploration of the Bunker, as well as an exhibition of vintage cars by the Nostalgia Club and a second-hand market in Piazza Alpini. A mix that attracts families, food lovers, and the curious.
Organized by Pro Loco Breno, the fair is an event rooted in the identity of the town and the entire Valle Camonica. Celebrating the spongada means renewing a link with the simple and devotional cuisine of the Brescia valleys, in a spring setting that symbolically opens the festival season in the valley.
The 20th edition of the Fiera della Spongada falls on Sunday, March 29, 2026, Palm Sunday. The center of Breno, in Piazza Generale Ronchi, will be filled with stands dedicated to spongada and typical products of Valle Camonica, with a program that combines taste, history, and adventure.
The common thread is the "Spongada d'Oro dé Bré" competition, now in its 18th edition, open to amateur bakers. Around the fair, there will be many opportunities to discover the monuments of the village.
