The rye bread festival that relights the historic ovens of Valle Camonica
Lo Pan Ner – in dialect "black bread", meaning rye bread – is a major cross-border festival that every autumn, on the same weekend, relights the historic ovens throughout the Alps, from Valle d'Aosta to Piedmont, from Lombardy to Trentino, extending to France and Switzerland. In Sonico, a municipality in Valle Camonica, province of Brescia, the event is one of the most cherished autumn appointments.
The heart of the festival is the relighting of the village's historic ovens, where local bakers and volunteers knead and bake rye bread using traditional methods. It's a journey into alpine memory, when black bread, which could be stored for a long time, was a precious food for mountain families during the long winters. Visitors and the curious can witness the baking process, discover ancient flours and techniques, and participate in tastings.
Making the festival even more vibrant is the district competition, where Sonico's different neighborhoods challenge each other in a contest linked to bread and tradition, fostering healthy rivalry and strong community involvement. It's an original way to keep the sense of belonging alive and pass on the value of this heritage to younger generations.
Inspired by UNESCO principles for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, Lo Pan Ner is much more than a local festival; it's a project that promotes artisanal knowledge, sustainability, and the deep connection between alpine communities and their territory. In Sonico, the festival is organized by the Pro Loco with the support of local entities, and is part of the broader Camuno and Lombard calendar of the event.
In mid-October 2026, Sonico will participate in Lo Pan Ner, the rye bread festival that relights historic ovens throughout the Alps on the same weekend. In Lombardy, the event involves Valtellina, Valle Camonica, Val di Scalve, and the province of Varese; in Sonico, the day will unfold among the village's historic ovens with baking, tastings, and the district competition.
The detailed program and the exact date for the 2026 edition will be confirmed by the Pro Loco of Sonico and the Lombard coordination of Lo Pan Ner in the weeks prior. The day, in line with the established tradition, will include:
Mid-October 2026, coinciding with the Lombard and cross-border edition of Lo Pan Ner (around October 14th in Lombardy).
