About Crocifisso Ritrovato

Between late April and early May, the historic center of Salerno steps back into the Middle Ages for the Fiera del Crocifisso Ritrovato. For four days, costumed processions, flag-wavers, falconers, jesters, fire-eaters, and artisan workshops bring the alleys and squares of the Campanian capital to life. Free to the public and recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a historical re-enactment of national interest, the event is rooted in the legend of Pietro Barliario and the ancient mercantile fairs of Salerno.

Four days of the Middle Ages in the heart of Salerno

The Fiera del Crocifisso Ritrovato is the most significant historical re-enactment in the Municipality of Salerno and one of the largest medieval fairs in Southern Italy. Every year, between late April and early May, the narrow streets and squares of the ancient center of the provincial capital are filled with merchants, artisans, musicians, acrobats, and figures in historical attire: for four days, the city suspends the present to tell its story through its medieval past.

The event spans the entire historic center—Piazza Portanova, Piazza Sant'Agostino, Piazza Alfano I, Piazza Pomona, Largo Abate Conforti, the Arco Catalano, and Palazzo Guarna—with a recent expansion into the eastern part of the city at Parco del Mercatello.

The legend of Pietro Barliario

The fair's origins are intertwined with one of the most famous legends of Salerno tradition: that of Pietro Barliario, a physician and alchemist who, according to popular lore, lived between the 11th and 12th centuries. After the death of his nephews—allegedly caused by his books of necromancy—a desperate Barliario sought refuge in the church of San Benedetto at the feet of a crucifix; the Christ figure is said to have bowed his head and opened his eyes in a sign of forgiveness. This miracle sparked the devotion to the "Crocifisso Ritrovato" (Rediscovered Crucifix) and, with it, the fair that for centuries served as one of the most important mercantile gatherings in Southern Italy.

The modern version of the event was established in 1992, based on an idea by Peppe Natella, and has grown steadily for over thirty years. Today, it is directed by Chiara Natella for Bottega San Lazzaro, with the support of the Municipality of Salerno, the Chamber of Commerce, the CNA, the Province, and the Campania Region.

Workshops, trades, and the artisan village

The daytime heart of the fair is the medieval market, featuring a reconstruction of ancient arts and crafts. Piazza Sant'Agostino hosts the artisan village, curated in collaboration with the CNA, where master craftsmen work in front of the public, showcasing ceramics, weaving, leatherwork, wrought iron, and traditional Salernitan techniques. Alongside the stalls are educational workshops designed for children and schools, making the event one of the most popular for families across Campania.

Shows, falconry, and historical games

From late afternoon, the fair shifts gears. Street theater troupes, musicians playing period instruments, jugglers, fire-eaters, and stilt-walkers roam the alleys, while the main squares host the major performances. Regular performers include the Acrobati del Borgo, the Magma company, Messer Stramagante, the Araldi Erranti, and the Falconieri dell'Irno with their raptor flight demonstrations.

  • Historical costumed processions with flag-wavers, nobles, ladies, and men-at-arms
  • Evening fire shows in Piazza Portanova
  • Falconry and archery exhibitions
  • Medieval games, living checkers, and tournaments
  • Academic meetings on Lombard Salerno and the Salerno Medical School
  • Taverns and historically-inspired cuisine

A re-enactment of national interest

The Fiera del Crocifisso Ritrovato is recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a historical re-enactment of national interest, a distinction that certifies its philological rigor and deep roots in the city's history. The 2026 edition, the 34th, recorded thousands of daily visitors, with over 150 artisans and exhibitors and a hundred costumed participants, confirming the fair as one of the primary spring tourist attractions on the Salernitan coast.

When to go

The event is traditionally held during the "bridge" holiday between April 25th and May 1st, spanning four consecutive days. The most evocative time is the evening, when torchlight and fire shows transform Piazza Portanova; mornings and early afternoons are ideal for leisurely exploring the market and workshops with children. Salerno's location, just a few kilometers from the Amalfi Coast and Paestum, makes it easy to combine the visit with a weekend in the region.

Crocifisso Ritrovato — edition 2026

The 34th edition of the Fiera del Crocifisso Ritrovato took place from April 30 to May 3, 2026, in the historic center of Salerno under the theme "In the Fire of Time." Four days of costumed processions, falconry, fire shows, a medieval market, and an artisan village, with an absolute novelty: the expansion of the fair to the eastern part of the city, at Parco del Mercatello.

"In the Fire of Time": the 34th edition

Presented on April 22, 2026, in the Sala del Gonfalone of the Municipality of Salerno, the 34th Fiera del Crocifisso Ritrovato chose the theme "In the Fire of Time," a leitmotif that ran through the evening shows and the grand pyrotechnic events in Piazza Portanova.

The direction was handled by Chiara Natella for Bottega San Lazzaro, with coordination by Andrea Carraro. For the first time, the event crossed the boundaries of the ancient center, reaching Parco del Mercatello in the eastern part of the city with an area dedicated to archery.

The final assessment reported thousands of daily visitors, with peaks over the weekend, over 150 artisans and exhibitors, and a hundred costumed participants. Among the most appreciated novelties was the living checkers game set up on a platform near the Cathedral in collaboration with the Italian Checkers Federation.
