The Salento-style pepper festival in the historic center of Alessano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of lower Salento, the town of Alessano (Lecce province, Puglia) celebrates one of the most iconic dishes of its rural tradition every summer with the Ficandò Festival. Organized by the Pro Loco of Alessano, the event transforms the village's historic center into a journey of taste and folk culture, where age-old flavors are rediscovered among the alleys and the evocative case a corte (courtyard houses).
Ficandò, also known simply as peperonata, is a humble, ancient recipe from Alessano: fried green peppers (preferably spicy) cooked in local extra virgin olive oil with tomatoes, onions, and fresh basil. It is a simple dish rich in history and flavor, served with homemade bread and frise, both typical Salento products. At the food stalls, the ficandò is prepared according to the traditional recipe, guarded and passed down by the local women.
During the festival, Alessano's historic center comes to life: courtyards and squares open their doors to welcome visitors, tastings, and performances. Salento folk music takes center stage, with traditional pizzica dances and songs accompanying the evening, while the courtyards host musical and theatrical performances. It is a perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Puglia, far from the crowded tourist spots, and to savor a culinary tradition currently undergoing a revival.
Alessano is a small town in the Capo di Leuca area, famous for being the birthplace of Don Tonino Bello, a figure deeply beloved in Salento and throughout Italy. The main square, named after the bishop, is one of the festival's beating hearts. Visiting Alessano during the Ficandò Festival means combining the discovery of a prestigious historic center with the pleasure of fine Puglian cuisine.
The event traditionally takes place in August and offers free admission. Tastings at the various food stalls in the historic center are available for purchase at affordable prices. For information and details on related events promoted by the Pro Loco, please contact the association's office.
The Ficandò Festival in Alessano is expected to return in the summer of 2026, during the period in August when it is usually held. At the moment, the Pro Loco of Alessano has not yet communicated the official date or the program for the 2026 edition.
Confirming the established structure of the festival, a tasting route for ficandò is expected among the alleys and courtyard houses of the historic center, with food stalls, folk music, and Salento pizzica. For final dates and the program, we invite you to follow the updates from the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Alessano.
