The 'furriata ri' torci' and the procession of the 'Patri di li Grazij' in the heart of the Madonie mountains
The Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix is the most significant religious and popular event in Ciminna, an agricultural village in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, nestled among hills overlooking the Sicani and Madonie mountains. The festival's origins date back to May 1651, when the community first gathered in prayer before the image of the Crucifix, venerated by the dialect name Patri di li Grazij (Father of Graces). Since then, the festival has been renewed every year, jealously guarded by the local population and the Confraternity of the Most Holy Crucifix.
The folkloric heart of the festival is the famous furriata ri' torci, which takes place in Piazza San Giovanni. Inherited from the ancient torchlight procession once led by knights carrying large decorated candles, the 'furriata' now features two groups of seven caparisoned mules: the animals perform synchronized laps to the melodies of the local brass band, while sweets are tossed to the crowd amidst the ringing of bells. It is a unique spectacle that blends faith, rural tradition, and community identity.
The most solemn moment is the procession of the Crucifix, which travels from the Church of San Giovanni to the Mother Church. The heavy statue is carried on the shoulders of approximately eighty barefoot devotees, dressed in white with traditional red sashes as a sign of penance and vows. The procession is led by a banner and drums, accompanied by two lines of faithful—many walking barefoot—who carry large lit candles alongside the confraternities.
The religious dimension is complemented by civil and popular festivities. By ancient privilege, established by a Royal Decree in 1853, a livestock and local produce fair is held in Ciminna during the festival, a legacy of the area's agricultural and pastoral roots. The days are enlivened by musical performances, entertainment, market stalls, and the specialties of Ciminna's cuisine, including traditional sweets and local products.
The Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix is much more than a commemoration: it is the thread that binds Ciminna natives scattered across the globe. Every year, emigrants return to the village to reunite with family, fulfill vows, and relive the tradition together. The strong community of Ciminna origin in Chicago organizes parallel celebrations, a testament to how deeply rooted this devotion is in the village's identity. Participating in the festival means immersing yourself in the most authentic soul of inland Sicily.
The 2026 Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix in Ciminna spanned several days, from April 30 to May 8, following the traditional calendar that opens the festivities with the ancient fair and concludes them in the days following the first Sunday of the month.
The central moment took place on Sunday, May 3, with the furriata ri' torci in Piazza San Giovanni: the caparisoned mules performed their synchronized laps amidst the band's music, the tossing of sweets, and the sound of bells. The procession of the Crucifix from the Church of San Giovanni to the Mother Church, featuring about eighty barefoot devotees, renewed one of the most intense rites of inland Sicily.
Alongside the religious celebrations, there were musical performances, entertainment, the local produce fair, and the flavors of Ciminna's tradition. Admission to all events was free.
Ciminna is located about 40 km from Palermo, in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (take the Villabate or Bagheria exit) and continuing inland along provincial roads. The nearest train station is in Bagheria, which is connected to the village by bus services.
The festival is traditionally celebrated at the beginning of May, with the first Sunday of the month serving as the highlight for the 'furriata ri' torci' and the procession.
Admission to all events is free. It is recommended to arrive at Piazza San Giovanni early to secure a spot for the 'furriata', wear comfortable shoes for walking in the historic center, and maintain a respectful silence during the procession.
