The patronal feast of Ventimiglia di Sicilia, held on the first Sunday of October
The Madonna del Rosario Festival is the most heartfelt celebration in Ventimiglia di Sicilia, a small town in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, in the heart of Sicily. Maria Santissima Regina del Rosario is the town's patron saint: her proclamation dates back to 1785, and since then, the community has dedicated a few days of intense devotion and popular celebration to her every year on the first Sunday of October.
The highlight is the solemn evening procession. After the Solemn Mass, the precious 17th-century statue of the Madonna is taken from the Mother Church by white-robed bearers and placed on the churchyard. From there, the procession begins, carried on the shoulders of the members of the confraternity, accompanying the Virgin through the streets of the historic center, decorated with colorful lights. It is one of the most evocative rites of the religious calendar in the Palermo area.
Alongside religious functions, the festival offers numerous moments of entertainment. Drums and folk groups parade through the streets, while the brass band accompanies the festivities with its concerts. The squares host shows and entertainment for all ages, in an atmosphere of participation that involves the entire community and the many emigrants who return to the village specifically for this occasion.
In the morning, two highly anticipated events take place: the traditional agricultural tool fair, a testament to the area's farming vocation, and the local produce fair, where you can taste the specialties of the Calamigna fiefdom. Ventimiglia di Sicilia maintains a strong rural and gastronomic identity, also highlighted by the local exhibition dedicated to the flavors of the territory.
Founded in 1627 under the name Calamigna, the village is set in a hilly landscape framed by the Monte Cane and Pizzo Trigna Nature Reserve. The Mother Church, with its 1681 baptismal font, and the Church of San Vito complete the town's artistic and religious heritage. The Madonna del Rosario Festival is the best opportunity to discover this authentic corner of inland Sicily, far from mass tourism circuits.
The festivities conclude, as is tradition, with the spectacular midnight fireworks that light up the sky above the town, bidding farewell to the day of celebration in honor of the patron saint.
The 2026 Madonna del Rosario Festival in Ventimiglia di Sicilia is celebrated in early October, with the main day set for Sunday, October 4, 2026, the first Sunday of the month. The traditional elements of the patronal feast are confirmed: the evening procession of the 17th-century statue carried on the shoulders of the confraternity, drum and folk group parades, brass band entertainment, the agricultural tool and local produce fair, and the midnight fireworks. The precise program, including the times of religious services and square performances, will be published by the Municipality of Ventimiglia di Sicilia in the weeks preceding the event.
Ventimiglia di Sicilia can be reached by car from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (exit Trabia or Termini Imerese) by continuing inland. The nearest airport is Falcone-Borsellino in Palermo (about 50 km away). The reference railway station is Trabia, on the Palermo-Messina line, with connections by bus or car.
The festival takes place every year on the first Sunday of October, with celebrations spread over several days.
Access to the festival, processions, square shows, and fireworks is free.
We recommend arriving early to witness the evening procession and checking the official channels of the Municipality of Ventimiglia di Sicilia for the updated program.
