The patronal feast of Godrano, blending faith, votive banquets, and an ancient livestock fair
In the heart of the Monti di Godrano, at an altitude of nearly 700 meters and just a stone's throw from the Bosco della Ficuzza, the small town of Godrano (with just over a thousand inhabitants, in the province of Palermo) preserves one of the most authentic patronal feasts in the Sicilian hinterland. The patron saint is Saint Joseph, venerated as the protector of the poor and humble, and his feast has represented the greatest moment of community cohesion for generations.
Unlike the liturgical date of March 19th, the main patronal celebration in Godrano traditionally takes place in early September, when the village comes alive with the faithful, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns.
The heart of the feast is the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Joseph, which winds through the streets of the historic center accompanied by hymns, a brass band, and the choral participation of the locals. Liturgical celebrations in the Mother Church mark the days of the feast with solemn masses and moments of prayer dedicated to the saint.
As in many rural Sicilian villages, devotion in Godrano is also expressed through votive banquetsโlavish outdoor spreads set up near the church, where local families contribute food prepared as a sign of abundance and charity. It is a true celebration of colors and flavors, following the ancient custom of preparing food to feed the poor.
The patronal feast has always been linked to the ancient livestock fair, which draws breeders and farmers from the entire district in early September. The fair testifies to the pastoral and agricultural vocation of Godrano, a land of forests and pastures, and represents one of the most important economic and social events of the year for the territory.
Visiting Godrano during the Saint Joseph Feast means discovering a little-known corner of the province of Palermo, immersed in the nature of the Ficuzza Forest and Bosco del Cappelliere, and experiencing an intact Sicilian folk tradition where religious, gastronomic, and rural dimensions merge into one great community celebration.
For the 2026 edition, the Saint Joseph Patronal Feast in Godrano is expected in early September (sources point to September 2-3, 2026), in line with the tradition of the Monti di Godrano village. The usual highlights are confirmed: the procession of the statue of Saint Joseph, celebrations in the Mother Church, votive banquets with fava bean and fennel soup, and the ancient livestock fair. The detailed program, including civil and religious events, has not yet been published: please refer to the Municipality of Godrano for updates.
Godrano is located in the hinterland of the province of Palermo, on the Monti di Godrano, near the Bosco della Ficuzza. By car, it can be reached from Palermo (about 45 km) via the SS121 towards Marineo, then continuing towards Godrano. There is no direct rail connection: the nearest station is in Palermo, from which you can continue by car or bus. The reference airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (Punta Raisi).
The patronal feast takes place in early September (traditional date: September 3rd). For updated dates and the program, it is best to contact the Municipality of Godrano.
Admission to the celebrations and the banquet is free. Comfortable clothing is recommended for the sloping streets of the mountain village, and we suggest taking advantage of the proximity to the Bosco della Ficuzza for a nature excursion.
