The Saint Rosalia Festival in Vicari is one of the most cherished religious events in the municipality of Vicari, a small village perched in the Sicani Mountains within the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. Saint Rosalia, the beloved patron saint of Palermo, is venerated here as the co-patron saint of the town alongside Saint George, who is celebrated in the spring. The feast traditionally falls around September 24th and marks a moment of deep devotion and community gathering for the people of Vicari.
The heart of the festivities is the solemn procession of the saint's statue, which travels through the streets and alleys of the medieval historic center. For the locals, the procession is a true triumph of faith, accompanied by marching bands, the faithful, and moments of prayer. At the end of the parade, the village sky lights up with a spectacular fireworks display, marking the conclusion of the festival's most solemn day. During the celebration, the town squares also host musical performances and entertainment, band gatherings, and activities for all ages.
The Vicari festival maintains a deep connection to the agricultural and pastoral traditions of the area. Historically, the event coincided with the final livestock fair of the season, a crucial appointment for the local economy. It is no coincidence that the name Vicari is thought to derive from the Latin Biccaris, meaning "ox producers," reflecting the town's ancient livestock-rearing vocation. Religion, community, and the rural world thus intertwine in a celebration that unites the sacred and the popular.
Visiting Vicari during the festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most evocative villages in the Palermo hinterland. The town is dominated by the remains of its castle, built in the Norman era and rebuilt in the 14th century by the Chiaramonte family. It also preserves traces of Arab rule, such as the famous Cuba, an ancient water cistern. The winding alleys of the historic center, the churches, and the views over the San Leonardo river valley provide a stunning backdrop to the festivities.
The Saint Rosalia Festival in Vicari will return in 2026 during its traditional period, around September 24th, the day the community of the Municipality of Vicari (Palermo province) honors the town's co-patron saint. At the moment, the precise dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: please refer to the official channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco Vicari for updates. According to tradition, the festivities will include the procession of the saint's statue, the fireworks display, and moments of music and entertainment in the historic center.
Vicari is located in the hinterland of the Palermo province, in the Sicani Mountains. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (take the relevant exit for the area) and via the SS121. The nearest train station is Vicari-Roccapalumba on the Palermo-Agrigento line; from Palermo's Falcone-Borsellino airport, it takes about an hour by car.
Admission to the festivities is free. Comfortable shoes are recommended for walking through the steep alleys of the historic center. For the updated program and procession times, please check the official channels of the Municipality of Vicari and the Pro Loco Vicari Facebook page.
