The great end-of-summer festival dedicated to Lucanian sausage
While the feast of San Biagio links the chain sausage to winter devotion, it is in early September that Cancellara dedicates a true grand festival to its most beloved product: the Festival della Salsiccia a Catena, one of the most anticipated events of the Lucanian late summer. The event, reaching its fifteenth edition in 2025, celebrates the "chain-linked" sausage, produced using a technique passed down from mother to daughter and recognized as a Traditional Agri-food Product (PAT).
As the mayor of Cancellara recalled, the festival offers workshops, gastronomic tours, and musical events, transforming the town center into a large space for tasting and celebration. The chain sausage is the absolute protagonist, but around it revolve moments of valorization of the territory, local producers, and the peasant traditions of the Alto Bradano.
Cancellara, a small municipality in the Province of Potenza a few kilometers from the provincial capital, experiences its liveliest moment during these days: the village streets fill with visitors drawn by the aroma of roasted sausage and the convivial atmosphere of the end-of-summer festival. Promoted by the Municipality of Cancellara and supported by the Basilicata Region, the festival is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic flavor of inland Basilicata and to experience the hospitality of a village proud of its roots.
After the fifteenth edition in 2025, the Festival della Salsiccia a Catena will return to Cancellara in September 2026 for its sixteenth edition. The precise dates will be announced by the Municipality of Cancellara in the preceding weeks.
The formula remains the one that has decreed the event's success: the chain sausage, a traditional product of the town, at the center of a program made up of workshops, gastronomic tours, and musical events, in a late summer dedicated to taste and the identity of the territory.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. It will be announced by the Municipality of Cancellara in the coming weeks.
Based on previous editions, the event typically includes:
How to get there: Cancellara is about 20 km from Potenza and is reachable via the SS96 bis and the provincial roads of the Alto Bradano.
Admission: the event is usually free to enter; sausage dishes and tastings can be purchased at the stands.
Accommodation: for overnight stays, it is advisable to refer to the facilities in Potenza and the surrounding municipalities.
