Legambiente's festival for the South at the San Matteo Convent, in the heart of the Gargano
FestambienteSud is the major international festival organized by the Legambiente circle, which for over twenty years has woven together world music, social theatre, literary meetings, seminars, and environmental education with the promotion of Southern Italy's territories. Born in the Gargano, the festival travels across Puglia every summer, from the villages of the sacred mountain to the Valle d'Itria, and finds one of its most charming stops in the Municipality of San Marco in Lamis, in the province of Foggia.
The Gargano heart of the festival is the San Matteo Convent, an ancient monastic complex that dominates the Valle dei Santi and overlooks the Foresta Umbra. Defined as a "temple of the spirit and place of culture" for its important library and its thousand-year history, the convent offers the festival an unrepeatable backdrop, where music and words engage in dialogue with the spirituality, stone, and landscape of the Gargano.
For several editions, FestambienteSud has dedicated its program to the African continent. The three-year project "Out of Africa" continues in 2026 with the theme "Desert, Oasis and Caravans. At the boundaries of the climate": a journey made of sounds, images, and words that arrives from the Sahara into the heart of Puglia, to tell the stories of desert cultures and reflect on climate change, migration, and the encounter between peoples. The artistic direction of the African trilogy is entrusted to Mauro Zanda, while the festival is directed by Franco Salcuni and Luciano Castelluccia.
Faithful to the spirit of Legambiente, the programming in San Marco in Lamis combines concerts with book presentations, theatrical performances, and scientific seminars on the desert and desertification. Many events offer free admission and are designed to involve residents and visitors in a model of sustainable culture that brings art, nature, science, and community into dialogue.
Part of a widespread festival that develops throughout Puglia, the San Marco in Lamis stop represents one of the most intense moments of the event. Within the convent walls, the Gargano woods, and the alleys of the village, the public can experience the most authentic Puglia: that of sacred sites, traditions, and music that crosses the borders of the Mediterranean.
The twenty-second edition of FestambienteSud, titled "Out of Africa โ Desert, Oasis and Caravans", chooses the San Matteo Convent in San Marco in Lamis for three days of world music, theatre, and environmental culture, from July 17 to 19, 2026.
It opens on July 17: at 6:30 PM, book presentations by Dipo Faloyn ("Africa Is Not a Country") and Marco Rossi Doria, followed at 9:00 PM by the theatrical performance "Our Deserts" by Giuseppe Armillotta. On July 18, the convent hosts the seminar "Desert and desertification between vital oases and traveling caravans" (from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM) and, in the evening, the concert by Bambara Files, a project between France, Burkina Faso, and Mali. On July 19, the grand finale with Julian Marley & The Uprising: the son of Bob Marley, 2024 Grammy winner for best reggae album, brings his world reggae to the Gargano, accompanied by a DJ set by Zaio & friends.
Alongside the concerts, the literary and scientific appointments confirm the environmentalist spirit of Legambiente, in dialogue with the Gargano landscape.
San Marco in Lamis is located on the Gargano, in the province of Foggia, and can be reached by car via the SS272. The San Matteo Convent is located a few kilometers from the town center, along the road towards San Giovanni Rotondo. The reference railway stations are Foggia and San Severo, which are connected by bus. The nearest airports are Bari-Palese and Foggia-Gino Lisa.
Many events offer free admission; paid concerts, such as Julian Marley's, have tickets available for purchase online via Vivaticket. Registration may be required for seminars. Please check times and access methods on the official website festambientesud.it.
