The Gargano opening of Legambiente's festival for the South
FestambienteSud is a major multidisciplinary festival organized by the Legambiente circle. For over twenty years, it has woven together world music, meetings, social theatre, excursions, and environmental education, all while promoting the territories of Southern Italy. Born in the Gargano region, the festival has evolved into a widespread event that spans Puglia, from the Itria Valley to the Gargano promontory, involving various municipalities in the province of Foggia and beyond.
As per established tradition, the Gargano leg of FestambienteSud begins in the Municipality of Rignano Garganico, in the province of Foggia. It is the smallest town in the Gargano National Park, a charming village overlooking the Tavoliere delle Puglie and guardian of the famous Grotta Paglicci, one of Europe's most significant Paleolithic sites due to its cave paintings and prehistoric artifacts. The inaugural concert is held in Largo Portagrande, in the heart of the town, within a community-focused setting.
For several editions, FestambienteSud has dedicated its program to the African continent. The theme «Out of Africa – Desert, Oasis and Caravans, at the climate's edge», the second chapter of a three-year journey, guides a voyage made of sounds, words, and images that travels from the Sahara to the heart of Puglia, telling stories of desert cultures and reflecting on climate change, migration, and the encounter between peoples.
True to the spirit of Legambiente, the program complements concerts with seminars, forums on peace and biodiversity, walks, tastings, and workshops. Many events, such as the one in Rignano Garganico, offer free admission and are designed to engage residents and visitors in a model of sustainable culture that fosters dialogue between art, nature, and the community.
By inaugurating the tour among the Gargano municipalities, the Rignano Garganico stop represents a symbolic moment of the festival. Here, amidst the stones of an ancient village and the landscape of the Park, the audience can experience the most authentic Puglia—the one of small towns, traditions, and music that transcends Mediterranean borders.
The twenty-second edition of FestambienteSud, titled «Out of Africa – Desert, Oasis and Caravans», kicks off on July 16, 2026, in Rignano Garganico, in the province of Foggia. As per tradition, the festival's Gargano tour inaugurates from the smallest center of the Gargano National Park.
The star of the evening is Daniele Sepe, a Neapolitan saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer among the most original on the Italian scene, known for a language that mixes jazz, singer-songwriter music, tarantellas, world music, and a strong sense of social commitment. The concert is held in Largo Portagrande at 9:00 PM, with free admission.
Alongside the concerts, the festival offers, as always, meetings, social theatre, and moments of reflection on the climate and the encounter between cultures, in the environmentalist spirit of Legambiente.
The Rignano Garganico stop inaugurates the Gargano tour of the 22nd edition, "Out of Africa – Desert, Oasis and Caravans." The festival then continues in other municipalities of the Gargano and Puglia until August 3, 2026.
Rignano Garganico can be reached by car via the SS693 and the Gargano road network; the reference railway stations are San Severo and Foggia, which are connected by bus. The nearest airports are Bari-Palese and Foggia-Gino Lisa. The concert is held in Largo Portagrande, in the town centre.
The concert in Rignano Garganico is free of charge. For other festival events, some of which are ticketed, tickets can be purchased online via Vivaticket. Please check times and access methods on the official website.
