About Festa te lu Contadinu

The Festa te lu Contadinu is one of the most traditional festivals in Salento, enlivening the small village of Serrano, in the municipality of Carpignano Salentino (Lecce), every summer. Established in 1995 by the local Pro Loco, it celebrates peasant heritage with long outdoor banquet tables, traditional rustic dishes like ciceri e tria and lu granu stumpatu, folk music, pizzica dancing, displays of antique farming tools, and period costume parades. An authentic dive into the rural identity of Puglia, filled with genuine flavors and village cheer.

The festival celebrating Salento's peasant heritage

The Festa te lu Contadinu is one of the most heartfelt and traditional summer events in Salento. It takes place every year in the small village of Serrano, part of the Carpignano Salentino municipality in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Puglia. For a few evenings in mid-to-late August, the streets and small squares of the village transform into a large open-air banquet, with long tables laden with food, the aroma of rustic cuisine, and folk music playing until late at night.

The origins: from 1995 to today

The event was founded in 1995 by the local Pro Loco of Serrano with the aim of preserving and passing on the memory of the Salento farming world. Over the years, it has become one of the most well-known and popular festivals in the province of Lecce, attracting visitors from all over Salento as well as tourists vacationing on the Adriatic and Ionian coasts. The figure of the contadino (farmer), with his hard work and wisdom, remains the central theme of every edition.

Traditional rustic Salento cuisine

The true heart of the festival is its traditional gastronomy, served at the tables in the spirit of ancient peasant hospitality. Typical dishes on the menu include:

  • Ciceri e tria, the famous fresh pasta, partly boiled and partly fried, served with chickpeas;
  • Lu granu stumpatu, the traditional pounded wheat dish;
  • the farmer's appetizer with seasonal vegetables prepared in various ways (zucchini, peppers, eggplant);
  • pittule, bruschetta with anchovies or sharp ricotta, wild chicory, grilled meats, and potato pitta;
  • homemade desserts like tarts, mustaccioli, and marzipan, accompanied by plenty of local wine.

Folk music, pizzica, and traditions

The gastronomic evenings are accompanied by performances of Salento folk music, featuring folk groups, pizzica, tarantella, and dance rhythms that involve both young and old. There are also exhibitions of antique agricultural tools and period costumes, as well as parades and re-enactments of ancient trades, providing a portrait of a community deeply connected to the land and the olive trees.

Serrano and Carpignano Salentino

Serrano is one of the villages in the municipality of Carpignano Salentino, an inland town in the Lecce area also known for its historic Festa te lu Mieru and its rural heritage. Visiting the Festa te lu Contadinu means discovering an authentic Salento far from mass tourism circuits, characterized by dry-stone walls, fields of ancient olive trees, and genuine hospitality in a charming corner of Puglia.
