The sweetest summer festival in Salento, in the heart of Botrugno
The Watermelon Festival in Botrugno, a small town of just over two thousand residents in the province of Lecce, has been a staple of the Salento summer since 1980. With over forty years of history, it is one of the most enduring and cherished festivals in lower Salento. Originally created to strengthen community bonds and celebrate local cultural and gastronomic traditions, it has grown into an event that attracts families and tourists from all over Puglia.
The heart of the festival is the historic center of Botrugno, with Piazza Indipendenza and the charming Palazzo Marchesale providing a stunning backdrop. The village streets come alive with stalls, vendors, lights, and music, creating the simple and authentic atmosphere that defines traditional Apulian village festivals.
The undisputed star is, of course, the watermelonโthe iconic fruit of the southern summerโwhich is sliced and offered for free to all attendees. Alongside the sweet watermelon, food stalls serve the best of Salento cuisine: horse meat stew, skewers, capicollo, sausage, parmigiana, frise, vegetable stews, homemade appetizers, desserts, and ice cream, all paired with local DOC and IGP wines.
The evening is brought to life by pizzica and folk music concerts, dance performances, street artists, and light displays that illuminate the village. The most anticipated and lighthearted moment is the watermelon-eating contest, which challenges the bravest participants every year amidst laughter and applause. The event is rounded off with craft exhibitions and art displays, showcasing the cultural soul of the festival.
With free admission and complimentary watermelon for all, the Watermelon Festival is designed as an inclusive, popular event, making it a favorite for families and visitors seeking a night of wholesome fun in Salento. Organized by the Gruppo d'Impegno Sociale APS-ETS (formerly Centro Turistico Giovanile) with the patronage of the Municipality of Botrugno, it remains one of the most authentic summer appointments in Puglia.
The 2026 edition of the Watermelon Festival in Botrugno is scheduled for Monday, August 17 and Tuesday, August 18, 2026, on the traditional dates that have marked mid-August in this small town of lower Salento for over forty years. As per tradition, the historic center and Piazza Indipendenza will host food stalls with free watermelon, Salento cuisine, folk music and pizzica, as well as the unmissable watermelon-eating contest. Admission is free.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including evening schedules and guest artists, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event, usually through official social media channels.
Based on previous editions, the two evenings will feature the opening of food stalls starting at 7:00 PM, with free distribution of watermelon, typical Salento cuisine (horse meat stew, skewers, frise, sausage, parmigiana) and local wines, accompanied by pizzica and folk music concerts, dance shows, street artists, craft exhibitions, and the watermelon-eating contest.
