The gastronomic festival dedicated to the Salento meatball in Bagnolo del Salento
The Purpetta Festival is one of the most beloved gastronomic events of the summer in Bagnolo del Salento, a small town in the province of Lecce, located in the heart of Grecìa Salentina just a few kilometers from Maglie and Otranto. Every year, during the August evenings, the village center comes alive with food stalls, outdoor dining tables, and live music to pay homage to a dish that tells the story of the most authentic soul of Salento's popular cuisine.
The purpetta—the meatball in the Salento dialect—is much more than just a dish: it is a Sunday and holiday ritual that unites families across Salento. Prepared with ground meat, soaked stale breadcrumbs, eggs, cheese, parsley, and a pinch of pepper, it is then fried in extra virgin olive oil until golden and crispy on the outside, yet soft on the inside. In local tradition, the purpetta is enjoyed freshly fried or simmered in tomato sauce, accompanied by a good local red wine.
During the festival, the stalls offer hot purpette along with other specialties of Salento gastronomy, in a journey of flavors that highlights local products and the culinary expertise of the village cooks.
The event follows the classic format of Apulian festivals: free admission, tastings at the stalls, and an entertainment program featuring live music, folk dances, and the inevitable pizzica that defines Salento evenings. The streets and squares of the historic center transform into a large convivial space where residents and visitors gather around taste and tradition.
Attending the Purpetta Festival means experiencing Salento far from the main tourist routes, among the white villages of the Lecce hinterland. Bagnolo del Salento, with its narrow streets and identity tied to rural civilization, offers the perfect opportunity to discover the genuine cuisine of Puglia and the warm hospitality of its people. A simple and authentic evening, made of good food, music, and smiles, which every year attracts families and curious visitors from neighboring towns.
The dates for the 2026 edition are expected in the first ten days of August, in accordance with the event's established tradition.
The 2026 Purpetta Festival returns to Bagnolo del Salento (LE) on August 7 and 8, 2026. As per tradition, for two evenings the village center will host food stalls dedicated to the purpetta, the Salento meatball made of meat, bread, and cheese fried in olive oil, accompanied by other local culinary specialties. There will be no shortage of live music and the convivial atmosphere of Apulian festivals. The complete program for the evenings will be communicated by the organizers closer to the event.
Bagnolo del Salento is located in the province of Lecce, in lower Salento. By car, it can be reached via the SS 16 and the provincial roads connecting Maglie and Otranto. The most convenient train station is Maglie, on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line, just a few kilometers from the village. The reference airport is Brindisi.
Admission to the festival is free. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls, with popular prices typical of village festivals.
We recommend arriving in the evening, when the stalls are in full swing and live music begins. For updated dates and the program for the 2026 edition, it is advisable to check the channels of the Municipality of Bagnolo del Salento and the local Pro Loco.
