The snail festival that lights up Cannole for Ferragosto
There is a moment, just before Ferragosto, when the small town of Cannole, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento, sheds its quiet village skin to become one of the busiest gastronomic hubs in Puglia. This is all thanks to the Municeddha Festival, a fair dedicated to the land snail, known in the local dialect as municeddha. This event has been running uninterrupted since 1985, drawing over one hundred thousand visitors across five nights, all enticed by a humble dish that has become the defining identity of an entire region.
This is no ordinary food festival. The Municeddha Festival is the only event in Salento to have earned the "Quality Festival" (Sagra di Qualità) recognition, a mark awarded by the UNPLI (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy) to festivals that adhere to strict standards of tradition, ingredient quality, and transparency. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Cerceto of Cannole, which mobilizes around two hundred and fifty volunteers to manage the stalls, kitchens, and the large performance area.
The municeddha is naturally the star, served in three ways that have become a ritual: sautéed in a pan, in tomato sauce, or roasted. However, the menu is a compendium of Salento's rural cuisine, featuring the peasant appetizer, bread with anchovies and spicy ricotta, pittule, horse meat stew, fried meatballs, rustic focaccias, grilled meats, and, to finish, pasticciotti and spumone.
Surrounding the kitchens, the Piazza degli Eventi hosts concerts and shows every night, ranging from traditional Salento pizzica to tribute bands, and DJ sets that keep the cocktail bar area buzzing until late at night. It is the quintessential Puglian village festival: eating, drinking, dancing, and gathering under the August stars. It is an event that unites the Cannole community and attracts visitors from all over Salento and beyond.
The Municeddha Festival is much more than a food fair: it is a piece of Salento's identity, a way to tell the story of the land, its traditions, and its hospitality through a small, humble mollusk that has become a symbol.
In 2026, the Municeddha Festival of Cannole reaches the milestone of its 40th edition, scheduled from Monday, August 10th to Friday, August 14th. The dates have been confirmed by the Pro Loco Cerceto on the event's official channels. The ingredients remain the same: municeddha cooked sautéed, in sauce, or roasted, the Salento rural cuisine stalls, and the music evenings in the Piazza degli Eventi, with free admission.
The detailed program with concerts and guests for the five evenings will be released, as every year, in the weeks preceding the event on social media channels and the festival's official website.
The dates for the 40th edition are confirmed: from August 10th to 14th, 2026, in Cannole, with free admission. The detailed program of the five evenings (concerts, shows, and DJ sets in the Piazza degli Eventi) will be announced by the Pro Loco Cerceto in the weeks leading up to the event, on the official website and the festival's social media channels.
As per tradition, every evening the gastronomic area offers the municeddha in its three classic preparations (sautéed, in sauce, roasted) along with dishes of Salento rural cuisine, while the Piazza degli Eventi hosts live music and DJ sets until late at night.
The festival takes place in the center of Cannole (LE), with the performance area concentrated in the Piazza degli Eventi and food stalls set up along the town streets.
Cannole is located in central Salento, about 30 km from Lecce and a short distance from Otranto. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 and the provincial roads connecting Maglie and Otranto. The nearest train station is Maglie (Ferrovie del Sud Est), from which you can continue by car or bus.
Admission to the festival is free. Food stalls and shows open in the evening; concerts in the square generally start around 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM and continue with DJ sets until late at night.
On peak nights, particularly around Ferragosto, the turnout is extremely high: it is advisable to arrive early to find parking and avoid queues at the municeddha stalls.
