Three autumn weekends of chestnuts, chestnut honey, and the woods of Valle di Soffumbergo
When the woods of the Julian Prealps turn gold and copper, Valle di Soffumbergo — a tiny hamlet in the Municipality of Faedis, in the province of Udine — prepares for its most beloved festival: the Chestnut and Chestnut Honey Festival. Organized by what presents itself as "the smallest Pro Loco in Italy", the event is now a popular autumn gathering for all of Friuli.
The absolute stars are the two products that give the festival its name: chestnuts, harvested in the valley's chestnut groves, and the prized chestnut honey, with its intense, slightly bitter flavour. The stalls offer roasted chestnuts, strudels, and chestnut desserts, but also frico, mixed grills, and local wines like Ribolla gialla.
The festival is not just about food. Every Saturday there are free guided walks in the woods for chestnut picking; Sundays are for nature excursions suitable for all ages. There are also show cooking events, live music, itinerant shows, and a rich program for children with creative workshops, face painting, pony rides, zip-lining, and forest immersion activities.
Valle di Soffumbergo is located in a picturesque corner of the Municipality of Faedis, nestled among the area's medieval castles and the vineyards of the Colli Orientali del Friuli. An ideal destination for an autumn outing that combines flavours, nature, and tradition.
In 2026, Valle di Soffumbergo will once again celebrate autumn with its most anticipated festival, spread out as tradition dictates over several October weekends. Planned are guided walks for chestnut picking, nature excursions, stalls with roasted chestnuts, chestnut honey, frico, and Friulian wines, as well as workshops and activities for children.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by Pro Loco Valle di Soffumbergo in the preceding weeks. Based on recent editions, the festival is structured as follows:
How to get there: Valle di Soffumbergo is reached from Faedis via hilly roads; from Udine, it's about 25 km towards east-northeast.
Admission: free event; food stalls and activities are paid.
Accommodation: farm stays and B&Bs in Faedis, Cividale del Friuli, and the Colli Orientali.
