The fig festival in the heart of lower Salento, in Marittima di Diso
The Festa della Fica is one of the most original and beloved summer events in lower Salento. It takes place every year on August 16th in Marittima, a small village in the municipality of Diso, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of southern Puglia. Born as a local neighborhood festival with a playful, authentically Salento spirit, it has grown over the years into a major attraction, filling the streets and squares of the small town with visitors. At the center of it all is the fig (known in the local dialect as "la fica"), a symbolic fruit of the local rural culture, celebrated in every possible form.
The day begins very early, at the first light of dawn, with the FiGara: a manual fig-harvesting competition in the countryside around Marittima, open to anyone who wishes to participate. The harvests are weighed and awarded prizes, and the fruit then becomes the star of the evening tastings. It is a symbolic moment that reconnects the community to its agricultural roots and its deep bond with the land of Salento.
The true heart of the event is the gastronomy. Along the streets of the historic center, you can sample over sixty varieties of figs from all over Salento, from fresh to dried, along with an endless array of preparations: jams, candied figs, traditional sweets, taralli, and even fig gelato. Everything is made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, in the spirit of genuine, seasonal cuisine. There is no shortage of Salento specialties and typical local products.
The village comes alive with craft markets filled with fig-themed gadgets (T-shirts, beach towels, hats, ceramics, tambourines, and curious traditional rural objects), art exhibitions, and installations set up in courtyards, squares, and ancient monuments. In the evening, Piazza Principe Umberto hosts the main stage, featuring concerts ranging from classical music to folk, theater, and the pizzica and taranta—the beating heart of Salento's musical identity—culminating in a grand finale at an open-air disco.
Organized by the HIGO - Festa della Fica APS association, with the patronage of the Province of Lecce, the festival is much more than a simple food fair: it is a celebration of rural memory, fig biodiversity, and the ironic, welcoming character of the Salento people. For one August evening, Marittima becomes a showcase for an authentic Salento, far from the major tourist flows but capable of offering culture, flavors, and music until late at night.
The 2026 edition of the Festa della Fica is scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2026, in Marittima, a village of Diso (Lecce). As per tradition, the day is expected to begin at dawn with the FiGara, the collective fig-harvesting competition in the countryside, followed by tastings of over sixty varieties of figs, themed markets, art exhibitions, and evening concerts in Piazza Principe Umberto.
At the moment, the HIGO - Festa della Fica APS association has announced the date but has not yet released the full program for the 2026 edition. Details regarding guests, times, and activities will be communicated closer to the event via the official website and the festival's social media channels.
Marittima is a village in the municipality of Diso, in lower Salento (Province of Lecce). By car, it can be reached from the Adriatic coastal road or the road connecting Andrano and Castro; the reference highway exit and train station are in Lecce, from where you can continue by car or local connections toward the Capo di Leuca.
Admission to the festival is free. Activities take place throughout the day on August 16th, from dawn (with the FiGara) until late at night, with tastings, markets, and concerts in the historic center and Piazza Principe Umberto.
As it is a small village that is very crowded during the festival, it is advisable to arrive early to park and enjoy the evening tastings. August is peak season in Salento: book your accommodation in the surrounding area (Diso, Andrano, Castro, Tricase) well in advance.
