The Festival of Festivals: faith, fire, and Fujenti in the heart of the Alto Tavoliere
The Festa del Soccorso is the event that, every year in mid-May, transforms San Severo—the leading city of the Alto Tavoliere, in the province of Foggia—into the stage for one of the most intense and spectacular patronal festivals in Puglia. The Solemn Celebrations in honor of Maria Santissima del Soccorso, the city's patron saint, are known by locals as the "Festival of Festivals": an inseparable blend of religious devotion, popular tradition, and grand spectacle that involves the entire historic center.
The beating heart of the festival is the 'alla sanseverese' batteries: rhythmic compositions of explosions, often dozens or hundreds of meters long, which begin with Catherine wheels and continue with a fuse that burns progressively, triggering a precise succession of shots and powerful 'responses'. Behind the trail of fire run the Fujenti, men and women of all ages who chase the flames through smoke, sparks, and confetti in what is experienced as a true collective catharsis. It is a tradition documented as far back as 1707 and 1748, now recognized by the Ministry of the Interior as unique in its kind.
Alongside the fire, the festival thrives on religious and civil rites: the solemn processions with the statues of Maria SS. del Soccorso, Saint Severus Bishop, Saint Severinus Abbot, and the Archangels pass through the streets of the center; the Historical Pageant (now in its 21st edition), the brass matinées of the 'Città di San Severo' Wind Orchestra, opera concerts, the National Fireworks Festival, and the Palio delle Batterie Serali mark the days. There is no shortage of street food with 'Giromangiando' and local specialties like the famous panino con torcinello.
Organized by the Municipality of San Severo together with the Archconfraternity of Maria SS. del Soccorso and numerous local associations, the festival is the highest expression of San Severo's identity. The city is ideally divided into its districts, each taking center stage with its own batteries, welcoming thousands of visitors drawn by a rare combination of the sacred and the profane. In recent years, the event has added major national-level concerts to its secular rites, bringing top names in Italian music to the Tavoliere delle Puglie.
The Festa del Soccorso 2026 enlivened San Severo from May 14 to 19, confirming its reputation as the "Festival of Festivals." Six days marked by celebrations in the Cathedral, 'alla sanseverese' batteries, and the Fujenti run, with the edition enriched by a new rose-window shaped logo, a symbol of the city's spiritual and cultural heritage. The program combined secular rites with nationally renowned musical events, culminating in the major concert on May 19 featuring rapper Fedez. The event, organized by the Municipality of San Severo with the Archconfraternity of Maria SS. del Soccorso, attracted thousands of visitors from Puglia and Molise.
San Severo is served by the railway station on the Adriatic line (Bologna–Bari–Lecce) and by Ferrovie del Gargano. By car: A14 motorway, San Severo exit. The nearest airport is Foggia 'Gino Lisa'; major airports are in Bari–Palese and Naples.
Events animate the entire historic center: San Severo Cathedral, Piazza Municipio, Corso Garibaldi, Piazza Repubblica, and the district streets. The batteries and fireworks displays are concentrated in Via Mario Carli and adjacent streets.
During the batteries and the Fujenti run, always maintain a safe distance and follow the organizers' instructions. Enhanced security measures are in force in event areas (glass and alcohol ban). Book your accommodation in advance for the main days, when the city is crowded.
