The Magnin and the Magninota bring the Carnival of the Ferriera district in Buttigliera Alta to life
The Ferriera Carnival is one of the most cherished traditions in the Ferriera district of Buttigliera Alta, located in the lower Susa Valley, near Turin. Organized by the Gruppo San Maurizio Ferriera ODV with the support of the local municipality, it is a genuine and inclusive community festival that brings together schools, the local parish, families, and associations throughout the month of February.
At the heart of the festivities are the town's traditional masks: the Magnin and the Magninota (the Tinsmith and his wife). These figures are deeply rooted in the valley's folklore and artisan history, and each year, they are portrayed by local residents. Their official investiture kicks off the Carnival with the symbolic handing over of the town keys by the municipal administration, followed by a highly anticipated visit to the district's schools.
The highlight is the parade of floats and costumed groups, which winds through the streets of Ferriera, starting from Piazza San Maurizio and ending in Piazza Jougne. The celebration concludes with the distribution of traditional bugie, hot chocolate, tea, and, for the adults, mulled wine. With floats created by the parish, school groups, and costumes designed by local families, the parade is a true collective celebration, featuring awards for the best masks and groups. The program also includes a popular masked dinner at the Palabianco, featuring traditional menus, music, and entertainment for children.
More than just a spectacle, the Ferriera Carnival is a vital meeting point for the community of Buttigliera Alta—a popular festival that keeps local traditions alive and celebrates the joy of gathering in the streets amidst confetti, costumes, and the flavors of the Piedmontese Carnival.
