The festival of the Paste di Meliga in Sant'Ambrogio, Susa Valley
Meliga Day is the annual event that, on the last weekend of September, brings the historic center of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino to life. This small town in the Susa Valley, located at the foot of the Sacra di San Michele in the Province of Turin (Piedmont), is home to the Paste 'd Melia 'd Sant'Ambreus—traditional cornmeal biscuits (known as "meliga" in Piedmontese) that have defined the town's culinary identity for generations and earned the event the status of a Regional Fair.
For two or three days, the village streets and squares host an artisanal and gastronomic fair featuring local producers. Here, you can sample and purchase Paste di Meliga in their classic form or paired with zabaglione or local wines, such as Moscato and Dolcetto. Alongside the food stalls, the program offers musical entertainment and shows, dance performances, and games for children, often featuring the local Ludobus.
Meliga Day is also the perfect opportunity to discover the heritage of Sant'Ambrogio. During the festival, the doors open to the Permanent Museum of Paste di Meliga, the church of San Giovanni Vincenzo, the Romanesque bell tower, and the Municipal Tower, which sometimes hosts archaeological exhibitions dedicated to the "Prehistory of the Susa Valley." The event also features photography exhibitions, the Meligart art display, and workshops where you can try your hand at making these famous biscuits.
In recent years, the event has expanded to include activities for all ages, such as the AmbroLeo Kids Run and S-Corriamo Insieme non-competitive races in Piazza XXV Aprile, and the "Itom at Home" vintage motorcycle rally, dedicated to the historic motorcycle brand linked to the region. It is a complete village festival that brings together food, history, and the community spirit of the people of Sant'Ambrogio.
