The patron saint of Cavazzo Carnico in the heart of Carnia
In the heart of Carnia, the northernmost mountain region of Friuli, the village of Cavazzo Carnico cherishes an ancient devotion to Saint Roch, its patron saint. The patronal feast is celebrated every year on August 16th, the liturgical day of the pilgrim saint, protector against the plague and invoked by Alpine rural communities.
The core of the day is the religious dimension: the solemn mass and the procession that winds through the village bring together the inhabitants and the many Carnic emigrants who return to the village precisely for this summer commemoration. In Cavazzo, moreover, the Church of Saint Roch itself—a valuable 18th-century building with a tripartite portico, which hosts concerts for the Carniarmonie festival—testifies to the deep bond between the community and its protector.
Cavazzo Carnico overlooks the Lake of the Three Municipalities (Lago di Cavazzo), the largest natural lake in the region, nestled among the Carnia mountains and a popular destination for swimming and water sports during the summer season. The feast of Saint Roch, falling in mid-August, takes place during the village's liveliest period, when the Carnia valleys welcome visitors and hikers.
Participating in the patronal feast of Saint Roch means connecting with the truest Carnia, the one of popular religious traditions, family ties, and a mountain territory proud of its identity. It is an intimate and communal event, far from the big festivals, but all the more precious for it.
In 2026, the feast of Saint Roch falls on Sunday, August 16th, the fixed liturgical date of the patron saint. The community of Cavazzo Carnico gathers around the traditional religious celebration, a central moment of the Carnic summer and an occasion for reunion for residents and emigrants.
The detailed program will be announced by the parish in the weeks preceding the commemoration. Based on tradition, the patronal feast includes:
