About Federician Week

In Enna, the ancient Castrogiovanni, the summer session of the Federician Week transports Italy's highest city back to the 13th century, the glorious years when Emperor Frederick II of Swabia made it his residence in the heart of Sicily. From July 3rd to 5th, 2026, the area around the Tower of Frederick and the streets of the historic center will host the Crusaders' Market, the Palio of the Ancient Districts, the Archers' Tournament, and the solemn Grand Historical Pageant, the true highlight of the event featuring the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the Emperor.

The Imperial Re-enactment of Enna

The Federician Week is the grand medieval historical re-enactment of the town of Enna, the capital of the province of the same name in the geographical heart of Sicily. The event celebrates the deep bond between the city and Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, who in the 13th century chose ancient Castrogiovanni—then one of the most strategic strongholds in the Mediterranean—as his favored residence. Promoted by the Casa d'Europa di Enna in collaboration with the Municipality and the Free Municipal Consortium of Enna, the festival is divided into two parts: a spring session in May, dedicated to conferences, readings, and European dialogue, and this summer session in July, the most spectacular, entirely devoted to costumed re-enactment.

The Program of the Federician Days

From July 3rd to 5th, 2026, the historic center of Enna transforms into a medieval city. Highlights of the event include:

  • Crusaders' Market: located in the spaces around the Tower of Frederick, featuring artisan stalls, tastings of ancient flavors, and period games for all ages;
  • Palio of the Ancient Districts: a challenge between the city's six historic neighborhoods—A Chiazza, Beddivirdi, U Pupulu, Funnurisi, San Pitru, and Sarbaturi—competing for supremacy in skill trials and medieval team games;
  • Archers' Tournament: historical archery competitions featuring companies from all over Sicily;
  • Medieval music concerts and performances by flag-wavers, musicians, and jugglers along Viale IV Novembre and in the squares;
  • Grand Historical Pageant: on July 5th, dozens of Sicilian historical groups parade in costume through the city streets, reconstructing "The Arrival of Frederick II in Castrogiovanni" and culminating in the symbolic delivery of the city keys to the Emperor.

A Journey into Sicily's Middle Ages

The re-enactment is more than just a show: it is a way to rediscover the identity of Enna and its extraordinary monumental heritage, from the Tower of Frederick to the Lombardy Castle. Guided tours, tastings, and parades of the medieval court accompany visitors on an immersive experience through history, folklore, and Sicilian popular tradition. The July session represents the beating heart of an event that celebrated its twentieth edition in 2026, confirming its status as one of the most cherished historical re-enactment events in the Sicilian hinterland.

Federician Week — edition 2026

The summer session of the 20th European Federician Week takes place in Enna from July 3rd to 5th, 2026. Three days of medieval re-enactment featuring the Crusaders' Market around the Tower of Frederick, the Palio of the Ancient Districts among the six historic neighborhoods, the Archers' Tournament, and, on July 5th, the solemn Grand Historical Pageant reconstructing the arrival of Frederick II in Castrogiovanni, culminating in the handing over of the city keys to the Emperor.

The July 2026 Federician Days close the twentieth edition of the European Federician Week of Enna in grand style. From July 3rd to 5th, the historic center hosts the Crusaders' Market with tastings of ancient flavors, medieval team games, the Archers' Tournament, and the challenges of the Palio of the Ancient Districts between A Chiazza, Beddivirdi, U Pupulu, Funnurisi, San Pitru, and Sarbaturi.
