The July Federician Days in Enna: a medieval re-enactment of Frederick II
The Federician Week is the grand medieval historical re-enactment of the town of Enna, the capital of the province of the same name in the geographical heart of Sicily. The event celebrates the deep bond between the city and Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, who in the 13th century chose ancient Castrogiovanni—then one of the most strategic strongholds in the Mediterranean—as his favored residence. Promoted by the Casa d'Europa di Enna in collaboration with the Municipality and the Free Municipal Consortium of Enna, the festival is divided into two parts: a spring session in May, dedicated to conferences, readings, and European dialogue, and this summer session in July, the most spectacular, entirely devoted to costumed re-enactment.
From July 3rd to 5th, 2026, the historic center of Enna transforms into a medieval city. Highlights of the event include:
The re-enactment is more than just a show: it is a way to rediscover the identity of Enna and its extraordinary monumental heritage, from the Tower of Frederick to the Lombardy Castle. Guided tours, tastings, and parades of the medieval court accompany visitors on an immersive experience through history, folklore, and Sicilian popular tradition. The July session represents the beating heart of an event that celebrated its twentieth edition in 2026, confirming its status as one of the most cherished historical re-enactment events in the Sicilian hinterland.
The July 2026 Federician Days close the twentieth edition of the European Federician Week of Enna in grand style. From July 3rd to 5th, the historic center hosts the Crusaders' Market with tastings of ancient flavors, medieval team games, the Archers' Tournament, and the challenges of the Palio of the Ancient Districts between A Chiazza, Beddivirdi, U Pupulu, Funnurisi, San Pitru, and Sarbaturi. Medieval music concerts, flag-wavers, and jugglers animate the city streets. The highlight is the Grand Historical Pageant on Sunday, July 5th, featuring dozens of Sicilian historical groups in costume.
Enna is located at an altitude of approximately 930 meters in the heart of Sicily. By car, take the Enna exit from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, then ascend towards Enna Alta. By train, the Enna station is connected to the historic center (Enna Alta) by bus. The nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa (about 80 km) and Palermo-Punta Raisi (about 130 km).
The summer session takes place from July 3rd to 5th, 2026, in the historic center of Enna Alta, with the epicenter at the Tower of Frederick, Viale IV Novembre, and the streets of the historic districts. The Grand Historical Pageant is scheduled for July 5th.
Events are primarily outdoors and free to attend. Comfortable shoes are recommended for navigating the historic center, as well as clothing suitable for cool mountain evenings. Parking in the center is limited: it is preferable to leave your car in the outer areas.
