Italy's most original nativity scene, staged on Christmas Eve among the ruins of a medieval castle
The Agira Living Nativity is one of the most distinctive Christmas events in inland Sicily. Known as "the most original nativity scene in Italy," it takes place in the village of Agira, in the province of Enna, and stands out for a unique feature: it is the only Sicilian living nativity performed exclusively on Christmas Eve, December 24th, rather than throughout the entire holiday period as is common elsewhere.
Organized by the Amici del Presepe Association, the event has been held without interruption since 1989, spanning over thirty-five editions. The performance comes to life among the ruins of the medieval castle—the Castello Conte Luna, a fortress that symbolizes the town and towers over the landscape—and along the narrow streets, courtyards, and alleys of the upper historic center.
At the end of Holy Mass, the scene opens with the arrival of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem for the census: Joseph leads the donkey carrying Mary through the town streets in search of lodging. The path leads to the Nativity, set among the castle ruins and illuminated by the Star of Bethlehem. Along the way, the public encounters dozens of actors bringing ancient trades to life—blacksmiths, carpenters, housewives, shepherds—inside huts rebuilt for the occasion, accompanied by music and carols that recreate a timeless atmosphere.
More than just a performance, the Agira Living Nativity is an immersive experience that involves both locals and tourists, transforming the entire village into a vast open-air stage. The spectacular lighting, the castle ruins, and the nighttime setting make this event one of the most evocative highlights of the Sicilian Christmas. Agira, listed among the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy," provides the ideal backdrop for this re-enactment that blends faith, tradition, and popular memory.
Admission is completely free. A free shuttle service is provided to reach the upper part of the town, where most of the performance takes place. The event begins at 8:00 PM on the night of December 24th.
