About Madonna dell'Alto

Every year, around Ferragosto (mid-August), the town of Petralia Sottana makes a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Alto, located on Monte Alto at an altitude of 1,819 meters in the heart of the Madonie Park. It is one of the oldest and most evocative Marian festivals in Sicily: on August 14th, a torchlit night procession illuminates the path to the summit, while on August 15th, the 15th-century statue is carried in procession around the sanctuary, making four stops to bless the cardinal points, the countryside, and the villages of the Madonie. A tradition of faith and community that has endured for centuries.

A festival suspended between sky and mountains

The Feast of the Madonna dell'Alto is one of the most deeply felt devotional events in the Madonie area, in the heart of Sicily. It takes place around Ferragosto at the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Alto, which stands on the summit of Monte Alto at an altitude of 1,819 meters, within the territory of the municipality of Petralia Sottana (Province of Palermo), inside the Madonie Regional Natural Park. It is, in fact, one of the highest Marian sanctuaries in Italy, and reaching it on foot along the mountain paths is an integral part of the festival experience.

History and legend of the sanctuary

The origins of this place of worship are lost between history and legend: tradition attributes its foundation to Blessed Guglielmo Gnoffi from Polizzi, while the first verified documents date back to 1454. The high altar houses the famous marble statue of the Madonna, signed in 1471 by Domenico Gagini, surrounded by numerous votive offerings that testify to centuries of popular devotion. Since 2011, the sanctuary has been twinned with the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.

The 'Quindicina' and the pilgrimage

The festival is preceded by the Quindicina, the fifteen days of preparation that enliven the first half of August with moments of prayer and a continuous influx of pilgrims toward the summit. The bond with Petralia Sottana is profound: by ancient custom, only the locals of Petralia have the honor of carrying the image of the Madonna on their shoulders during the procession. Neighboring towns, such as Castellana Sicula, celebrate their own recurrence on the first Sunday of July.

The two days of celebration

  • August 14th — the evocative night procession with torches accompanies the faithful along the path to the sanctuary, in an atmosphere of great spiritual recollection.
  • August 15th — the solemn day: the statue is carried in procession around the sanctuary with four stops to bless the cardinal points, the countryside, and the Madonie villages. The religious ceremony is traditionally followed by a country feast with a communal lunch (the "schiticchiata").

A living tradition

Between faith, dialect songs ("Evviva Maria"), the blessing of the fields, and conviviality, the Feast of the Madonna dell'Alto combines spiritual and popular dimensions, offering those who climb to the summit one of the widest panoramas in the Madonie. It is a defining identity event for Petralia Sottana and the entire Madonie region.
