The procession of the Madonna escorted by the Giants Kronos and Mithia, where faith meets legend
The Madonna della Luce and The Giants Festival is the most cherished celebration in Mistretta, a village perched in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, in the heart of Sicily. Every year, on the fixed dates of September 7th and 8th, the town gathers around the statue of the Madonna della Luce—usually kept in the church near the cemetery—to accompany it in a procession that draws faithful and curious visitors from across the region.
The most spectacular feature of the festival is the two Giants, large fiberglass statues depicting mythological warriors. Kronos, representing Time, wields a drawn sword; Mithia, representing Myth, carries ears of wheat and wildflowers in his right hand. The two figures escort the Virgin like bodyguards and, at key moments, perform a characteristic ritual dance that thrills the crowd. In the local dialect, the Madonna is known as Matr'a Luci and the Giants as Gesanti.
The origin of the Giants is tied to an ancient legend: it is said that, along with a sacred image of the Madonna, some unusually large human bones were found, attributed to two giants who stood guard over the Virgin. The festival thus becomes a fascinating blend of paganism and Christianity, folklore and mysticism, making Mistretta a unique case in the landscape of Sicilian patronal feasts.
The structure of the festival follows a well-established routine every year:
During the two days of celebrations, the historic center of Mistretta comes alive with market stalls, brass band music, and a festive atmosphere. The festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most characteristic villages of the Nebrodi, with its stone buildings, ancient churches, and panoramic views of the Messina mountains. It is an event that combines devotion, tradition, and popular spectacle.
The Madonna della Luce and The Giants Festival returns to Mistretta on the fixed dates of September 7th and 8th, 2026. As per tradition, on the afternoon of September 7th, the statue of the Virgin will be brought into town to meet the Giants Kronos and Mithia, who will perform their ritual dance; on September 8th, the solemn procession will traverse the historic center, concluding with the great bonfire and the final dance of the Giants.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times and events, will be announced by the organizers closer to the date.
Fixed annual dates: September 7th and 8th. The highlights (meeting with the Giants on the 7th, solemn procession on the 8th) take place in the late afternoon, around 6:00 PM.
