The patronal feast of Spoltore in honor of its patron saint
For Spoltore, a town in the province of Pescara in Abruzzo, April 28th is the most anticipated day of the year: the city celebrates its patron saint, Saint Pamphilus the Bishop, with a festival that blends religious devotion, music, and community spirit. The occasion is so significant that public offices and local schools remain closed, a testament to how deeply the cult of the patron saint is woven into the identity of this ancient village.
Saint Pamphilus was the bishop of the diocese of Sulmona-Valva between the late 7th and early 8th centuries. His name, of Greek origin, means "friend of all," a trait that reflects his reputation as a gentle and charitable man, dedicated to the poor and pilgrims. He is venerated as the patron saint of several Abruzzo communities, including Sulmona, Spoltore, and Scerni. In Spoltore, the cult of the Saint has ancient roots, traditionally introduced by immigrants from Sulmona. His feast day, set for April 28th, falls at a symbolic moment in the Abruzzo agricultural calendar, linked to spring and the rebirth of the countryside.
The festival takes place entirely on April 28th, between the historic center and the Church of San Panfilo. Typical celebrations include:
The Feast of Saint Pamphilus is much more than a religious observance: it is the occasion when the community of Spoltore reconnects with its roots. The sound of the band echoing through the alleys, the procession of the statue, and the participation of families make this day a moment of sharing that renews itself year after year, keeping a centuries-old tradition of the Pescara and Abruzzo region alive.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Pamphilus took place on Tuesday, April 28th in Spoltore, with public offices and schools closed for the occasion.
The day began at 9:00 AM with the "Cittร di Ripa Teatina" band parading through the streets of the center, followed from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM by an open-air concert in Piazza Q. Di Marzio. At 6:00 PM, the solemn Holy Mass was celebrated in the Church of San Panfilo; at its conclusion, the procession with the statue of the Saint began along Via dei Calderai, Via Di Marzio, Via Giotto, and Via Fonzi. The evening concluded at 9:00 PM with a concert by the "Claudio Monteverdi" Youth Wind Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Fausto Esposito.
Spoltore is located just a few kilometers from Pescara, in Abruzzo. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Pescara Ovest-Chieti exit) or the A25. The reference railway station is Pescara Centrale, which is connected to the town center by local bus lines.
The patronal feast takes place in the public spaces of the historic center and in the Church of San Panfilo: participation is free and open to all.
On April 28th, public offices and schools are closed. It is recommended to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Spoltore and the Parish for updated times regarding the Mass and procession.
