In honor of Saint Ciriaca, Saint Pantaleon, and Saint Sylvester
The Pianella Patronal Feast represents the heart of summer in the town of Pianella, located in the hills of the Pescara province in Abruzzo. Traditionally celebrated during the last week of July, the event is dedicated to the town's three patron saints: Saint Ciriaca, Saint Pantaleon, and Saint Sylvester. The festival is organized by the Parish of Sant'Antonio Abate, led by the Carmelite Fathers, with the support of the municipal administration and local associations.
A central figure in Pianella's devotion is Saint Ciriaca, a young Roman virgin and martyr from the 3rd century. Her remains, originally kept in the Catacombs of Priscilla in Rome, arrived in Pianella on April 2, 1834, thanks to the intercession of the local bishop and missionary Giuseppangelo de Fazio, who obtained their translation from Pope Gregory XVI. Today, the Saint's relics are preserved in an urn inside the mother church of Sant'Antonio Abate, a 15th-16th century building adorned with Neapolitan Baroque stuccoes and decorations.
The most evocative moment of the feast is the procession that winds through the streets of the historic center. Following a deep-rooted custom, the verginelleโyoung girls dressed in whiteโmarch in honor of the Saint, while devotional songs in the local dialect accompany the pageant. The veneration also involves the compagnie, groups of faithful from neighboring towns who travel to Pianella to pay homage to the patrons, creating one of the most vibrant mosaics of popular faith in inland Abruzzo.
Alongside the liturgical celebrations, the days are enriched with secular events that animate the town's squares and streets: pop and brass band concerts, performances, illuminations, a funfair, and the traditional fireworks that conclude the festivities. The air fills with the scents of local gastronomy, with specialties and traditional Abruzzese products offered at the town's food stalls.
The Patronal Feast has always been a meeting point for the entire Pianella community. It represents the deep bond between the town and its patrons, a moment where historical memory, spirituality, and celebration merge, drawing back many emigrants who return to their native village during these days. It is an event that tells the authentic soul of Abruzzo, balancing religious tradition and popular warmth.
The 2026 edition of the Pianella Patronal Feast is scheduled from July 24 to 27. As per tradition, the celebrations will honor the three patron saints, Saint Ciriaca, Saint Pantaleon, and Saint Sylvester, with solemn religious rites, the procession through the historic center, and moments of secular celebration. The organization is managed by the Parish of Sant'Antonio Abate, in collaboration with the municipal administration.
